🔧 RAV4 - Cabin Air Filter Replacement
You’ll be replacing the cabin air filter that cleans the air coming through the vents inside your RAV4. Over time it clogs with dust, pollen, and debris, which reduces airflow and can cause bad smells.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 10-20 minutes
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- 😷 Work in a well‑lit area and set the parking brake so the RAV4 cannot move.
- 🧤 Wear gloves if you have dust or allergy sensitivity; the old filter can be very dirty.
- 🪟 Keep the ignition off while working so the blower fan does not turn on unexpectedly.
- 🔌 Battery disconnect is not required for this job.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- 🧤 Nitrile or mechanic gloves
- 🕶️ Safety glasses
- 🪛 Phillips #2 screwdriver
- 🪛 Trim removal tool (plastic)
- 🧹 Shop vacuum with crevice attachment
- 🧽 Clean microfiber cloth
🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- 🧱 Cabin air filter (RAV4, 2017, correct size) - Qty: 1
- 🌿 HVAC cleaner or cabin air freshener spray - Qty: 1 (optional)
📋 Before You Begin
- 🅿️ Park the RAV4 on level ground, shift to P, and set the parking brake.
- 🔑 Turn the ignition off and remove the key or switch off the push button.
- 🧺 Empty the glove box so nothing falls out when you lower it.
- 📦 Make sure your new cabin air filter is the right size and note the “AIR FLOW” arrow on its side; you must install it in the correct direction.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Open and prepare the glove box
- Use your hand to open the glove box fully.
- Remove any items inside so you can see the sides and back clearly.
- Less clutter means nothing breaks or pinches.
Step 2: Disconnect the glove box damper arm
- The damper arm is a small plastic “arm” on the right side of the glove box that slows its opening.
- With one hand supporting the glove box, gently pull the end of the damper arm straight off its pin. You can use the trim removal tool (plastic) to gently pry if needed.
- Do not yank; plastic can crack.
Step 3: Release the glove box stops and lower the glove box
- On both sides of the glove box there are small “stops” that hit the dash frame.
- With one hand, push in on the right side of the glove box to flex the plastic inward until the stop clears the dash, then repeat on the left side.
- Once both sides are free, slowly lower the glove box down so it hangs, exposing the cabin filter cover behind it.
- Push gently; the plastic is flexible but not unbreakable.
Step 4: Locate and remove the cabin filter cover
- Behind the lowered glove box, you’ll see a rectangular black plastic cover on the HVAC box. This is the cabin filter cover.
- Use your fingers to squeeze the clips or tabs on the sides of the cover toward the center.
- If it’s tight, use the trim removal tool (plastic) to help press the tabs, then pull the cover straight off.
- Set the cover aside where you won’t lose it.
Step 5: Remove the old cabin air filter
- Grasp the edge of the old filter and pull it straight out by hand.
- Pay attention to which way the “AIR FLOW” arrow is pointing before you remove it (usually downwards on your RAV4).
- Keep the filter level so leaves and dust don’t spill into the blower fan area.
- Check the dirt; it shows how often to replace.
Step 6: Clean the filter housing area
- Use the shop vacuum with crevice attachment to gently vacuum out leaves, dust, or debris inside the filter slot and around the opening.
- Use the clean microfiber cloth to wipe any visible dust on the plastic housing.
- If you are using an HVAC cleaner spray, follow its instructions now, spraying lightly into the housing while avoiding soaking electronics.
Step 7: Install the new cabin air filter (correct direction)
- Check the new filter for an “AIR FLOW” arrow printed on the side.
- On the 2017 RAV4, the arrow should point down when installed, matching the airflow direction.
- Slide the new filter straight into the slot by hand, making sure it sits flat and fully inside the housing.
- Do not crush or bend the filter.
Step 8: Reinstall the cabin filter cover
- Position the cover over the opening, lining up the tabs and slots.
- Push the cover straight on by hand until both side clips click into place.
- These clips are snap-fit; just press until you hear or feel a click. No torque spec — just snug by hand.
Step 9: Reattach and close the glove box
- Lift the glove box back up toward its normal position.
- Push in on both sides of the glove box again so the side “stops” slide back past the dash frame, then let them rest in place.
- Reconnect the damper arm on the right side by pushing it back onto its pin by hand until it clicks in place.
- Open and close the glove box a few times to make sure it moves smoothly.
Step 10: Final clean-up
- Put your items back into the glove box.
- Use the shop vacuum with crevice attachment and microfiber cloth to clean any dust around the passenger footwell.
- Dispose of the old cabin filter in the trash; do not wash and reuse it.
✅ After Repair
- 🚗 Turn the ignition on, set the fan speed to medium, and cycle through different vents (face, floor, defrost) to feel airflow.
- 👃 Check that airflow is stronger and smells fresher; a mild smell from new filters or cleaner is normal and should fade.
- 📅 Note the date and mileage; plan to replace the cabin filter roughly every 12 months or 15,000–20,000 km, or more often in dusty conditions.
