🔧 Rio - Cabin Air Filter Replacement

Your Rio’s cabin air filter cleans the air coming through the HVAC vents. Replacing it helps improve airflow, reduces odors, and keeps dust/pollen out of the cabin.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.2-0.4 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Turn the ignition OFF before working under the dash/glove box.
  • ⚠️ Avoid breathing dust from the old filter; wear a mask if needed.
  • ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for this repair.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Phillips #2 screwdriver
  • Plastic trim tool set
  • Flashlight
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Cabin air filter - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Open the passenger door and fully empty the glove box.
  • Have a trash bag ready for dusty filters.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open and support the glove box

  • Open the glove box all the way.
  • Use a flashlight to look at both sides of the glove box for the stops (small plastic “ears” that keep it from dropping).

Step 2: Release the glove box stops

  • Press the glove box sides inward by hand to clear the stops, then let the glove box swing downward.
  • If a side panel or small retainer blocks access, gently pry it using a plastic trim tool set. (A trim tool is a plastic pry tool that helps prevent scratches.)

Step 3: Disconnect the glove box damper (if equipped)

  • On the right side, you may see a small “damper” arm (a little shock/strap that slows the glove box).
  • Pop it off its pin using your fingers or a plastic trim tool set.

Step 4: Remove the cabin filter access door

  • Behind the lowered glove box, find the rectangular cabin filter housing.
  • Press the tabs and remove the cover by hand.
  • If a screw is present on the cover, remove it with a Phillips #2 screwdriver.

Step 5: Remove the old cabin air filter

  • Slide the filter straight out.
  • Keep it level to avoid dumping debris.
  • Note how the old filter is oriented before pulling it out.

Step 6: Install the new cabin air filter

  • Check the airflow arrow on the filter frame.
  • Install it in the same direction as the old one (typically the arrow points down toward the blower, but match what you removed).
  • Slide it in without forcing it; it should seat smoothly.

Step 7: Reassemble the glove box

  • Reinstall the housing cover until the tabs click (or tighten the screw with a Phillips #2 screwdriver if equipped).
  • Reconnect the damper arm (if equipped) by pressing it back onto its pin.
  • Lift the glove box and press the sides inward again to pass the stops back into place.
  • Close the glove box and reinstall everything you removed.

✅ After Repair

  • Start the engine and run the HVAC fan on medium, then high.
  • Switch between fresh air and recirculation to confirm normal airflow.
  • If you hear whistling/rattling, recheck that the filter cover is fully clipped in.

💰 DIY vs Shop Cost
