🔧 Civic - Cabin Air Filter Replacement
Your Civic’s cabin air filter cleans the air going through the HVAC system (heat/AC). Replacing it helps airflow, reduces musty smells, and keeps dust/pollen out of the cabin.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.2-0.4 hours

đź“‹ Before You Begin
- Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
- Move the front passenger seat back to give yourself room.
- Have a trash bag ready for old debris.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Open and empty the glove box
- Open the glove box and remove any items so nothing falls out.
- Use a flashlight to look along the right side for a small “damper” arm (a little slow-down strap that controls how the glove box drops).
Step 2: Disconnect the glove box damper
- If equipped, gently pry the damper arm off its pin using a trim removal tool (plastic) (specialty).
- Work slowly—this is a small plastic clip.
Step 3: Drop the glove box down
- With the glove box open, press in on both sides of the glove box (the flexible side walls) to clear the built-in “stops.”
- Once the stops clear, lower the glove box down toward the floor.
Step 4: Remove the cabin filter door
- Behind the glove box you’ll see a rectangular filter housing with a cover/door.
- Pinch the tabs on the cover and pull it straight off. If there’s a small screw on your cover, remove it using a Phillips #2 screwdriver.
Step 5: Remove the old cabin air filter
- Pull the filter straight out of the housing.
- Keep it level to avoid dumping leaves and dust.
- Check for acorns/leaves—common in this area.
Step 6: Install the new cabin air filter
- Look for the airflow arrow on the side of the new filter.
- Install it with the arrow pointing down (toward the floor) to match airflow direction in your Civic.
- Slide it in gently; it should seat without bending.
Step 7: Reinstall the cover and glove box
- Reinstall the filter cover by snapping the tabs back in (or reinstall the screw using a Phillips #2 screwdriver).
- Lift the glove box back up and press the sides in again so the stops pass into place.
- Reconnect the damper arm to its pin by pressing it on by hand (use the trim removal tool (plastic) (specialty) only if you need gentle help).
âś… After Repair
- Start the engine and run the fan on medium speed to confirm normal airflow and no rattles.
- Switch between fresh air/recirculation to confirm the door sounds normal.
- If there’s an odor, run fresh air for 5 minutes.
