🔧 Frontier - Cabin Air Filter Replacement
Your Frontier’s cabin air filter cleans the air going through the heater and A/C. Replacing it helps airflow, reduces odors, and keeps dust/pollen out of the cabin.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.2-0.5 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- 🧤 Turn the ignition OFF and remove the key before starting.
- 🧠 Use gentle force—glove box plastic tabs can crack if forced.
- 😷 If the old filter is very dirty, wear a dust mask and gloves.

📋 Before You Begin
- Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
- Move any items out of the glove box.
- Have a flashlight ready—the filter door is tucked behind the glove box.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Open and empty the glove box
- Open the glove box fully and remove everything inside.
- Use flashlight to look along the right side of the glove box for a small “damper” arm (a small support that slows the glove box as it opens).
Step 2: Disconnect the glove box damper arm
- Use a trim removal tool (plastic pry tool) to gently pop the damper arm off its pin/peg on the glove box side.
- Go slow—this clip is easy to snap.
Step 3: Drop the glove box down
- With the glove box open, press the glove box sides inward (left and right) by hand to clear the built-in “stops.”
- Let the glove box swing down toward the floor.
Step 4: Remove the cabin filter access door
- Behind the glove box opening, locate the cabin filter cover/door (a small rectangular panel).
- Use trim removal tool (plastic pry tool) to help press the tabs and pull the cover off.
Step 5: Remove the old cabin air filter
- Pull the old filter straight out by hand while wearing nitrile gloves.
- Note the airflow arrow direction printed on the filter (it must match the new one’s direction).
Step 6: Install the new cabin air filter
- Slide the new filter in the same way the old one came out (match the airflow arrow direction).
- Make sure the filter seats fully and isn’t folded or pinched.
Step 7: Reinstall the access door and glove box
- Reinstall the filter cover until the tabs click in place (push by hand).
- Lift the glove box back up, press the sides inward to pass the stops, and close it.
- Reconnect the damper arm using the trim removal tool (plastic pry tool) if needed to guide it onto the peg.
✅ After Repair
- Start the engine and run the fan on medium/high for 30 seconds to confirm good airflow and no rattles.
- If you hear a ticking noise, the filter may not be fully seated—recheck the cover and filter position.
