🔧 Accord - Cabin Air Filter Replacement

Your Accord’s cabin air filter cleans the air coming through the HVAC vents (heat/AC). Replacing it helps reduce dust, odors, and weak airflow—especially if the blower sounds louder than usual.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.3-0.5 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Turn the ignition OFF and remove the key before working under the dash.
  • ⚠️ Don’t force plastic tabs—warm cabin plastics break less easily.
  • ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for this job.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Flashlight

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Cabin air filter - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Move the front passenger seat back to give yourself space.
  • Have a trash bag ready—the old filter can drop dust/leaves.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open and empty the glove box

  • Put on nitrile gloves and safety glasses.
  • Open the glove box and remove anything inside so nothing falls out.
  • Use a flashlight to see the sides of the glove box clearly.

Step 2: Release the glove box stops

  • With the glove box open, press inward on both glove box side walls using your hands (no tools needed).
  • This lets the glove box swing down farther past the “stops” (the little built-in catches).
  • Press evenly on both sides to avoid cracking plastic.

Step 3: Unhook the glove box damper arm

  • On the right side of the glove box, locate the small “damper” arm (a little strut that slows the glove box). A damper is a part that controls movement so it doesn’t drop fast.
  • Use your fingers and a flashlight to see the clip/loop and gently unhook it from the glove box.
  • Let the glove box hang down out of the way.

Step 4: Remove the cabin filter access cover

  • Behind the glove box, find the rectangular cabin filter housing.
  • Pinch the tabs on the housing cover using your hands (use the flashlight if needed).
  • Pull the cover straight off and set it aside.

Step 5: Slide out the filter tray and remove the old filter

  • Pull the filter tray straight toward you using your hands.
  • Remove the old cabin air filter from the tray carefully to avoid dumping debris.
  • If there are leaves or dust in the housing, wipe it out with a gloved hand (use your nitrile gloves).

Step 6: Install the new cabin air filter (correct direction)

  • Check the airflow arrow printed on the new filter frame.
  • Install it in the tray so the arrow points down (toward the floor), matching airflow direction through the HVAC.
  • Slide the tray back into the housing using your hands until fully seated.

Step 7: Reassemble the glove box

  • Reinstall the housing cover by pushing it on until both tabs click.
  • Reconnect the glove box damper arm on the right side using your fingers.
  • Lift the glove box, then press in on both sides again to pass the stops back into place.
  • Close the glove box.

✅ After Repair

  • Start the engine and run the HVAC fan on medium and high to confirm steady airflow.
  • Switch between fresh air and recirculation to confirm the air sounds normal and there’s no rattling.
  • If you notice a musty smell, run the A/C for a few minutes—new filters can stir up old dust briefly.

💰 DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $80-$150 (parts + labor)

DIY Cost: $15-$35 (parts only)

You Save: $45-$135 by doing it yourself!

Shop labor rates vary but typically run $100-$150/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 0.3-0.5 hours.
