🔧 Accord - Cabin Air Filter Replacement
This job replaces the cabin air filter that cleans the air coming through the vents in your Accord. A fresh filter helps keep the heater and A/C working well and reduces dust and odors inside the car.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 15–30 minutes
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- 🔸Turn the ignition off, remove the key fob from the car, and make sure the blower fan is switched off.
- 🔸Do not turn on the A/C or fan while the filter is removed to avoid pulling debris into the system.
- 🔸Work gently around the glove box plastic parts to avoid breaking the side stops and damper arm.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- 🔸Work light or flashlight
- 🔸Flat trim removal tool (plastic)
- 🔸Mechanic gloves
- 🔸Safety glasses
- 🔸Shop towel or small vacuum
🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- 🔸Cabin air filter (HVAC, behind glove box) - Qty: 1
- 🔸Interior trim cleaning wipes - Qty: 1 pack
📋 Before You Begin
- 🔸Park your Accord on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
- 🔸Turn off the climate control system and the ignition.
- 🔸Empty the glove box so nothing falls out when it is lowered.
- 🔸Have the new cabin filter ready so the system is not open to dust for long.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Open and prepare the glove box
- 🔸Open the glove box fully on the passenger side.
- 🔸Remove any items inside so you can see the sides and back clearly.
- 🔸Use the work light or flashlight to see the components behind and around the glove box.
Step 2: Disconnect the glove box damper arm
- 🔸On the right side of the glove box, look for a small plastic arm that connects the glove box to the dash (this is the damper that makes the glove box open slowly).
- 🔸Gently support the glove box with one hand.
- 🔸Use your other hand or the flat trim removal tool (plastic) to carefully pry the damper arm off its pin on the glove box side. Pull straight off, not at an angle.
Step 3: Release the glove box side stops
- 🔸Near the top on each side of the glove box, you’ll see molded plastic “stops” that prevent it from dropping all the way down.
- 🔸Gently push in on both side walls of the glove box at the stops so they clear the dashboard opening.
- 🔸Once both sides are pushed in, allow the glove box to rotate downward and hang, giving you access to the HVAC housing behind it. Support it so it doesn’t drop suddenly.
Step 4: Locate and open the cabin filter access door
- 🔸Behind the lowered glove box, you will see a rectangular plastic cover on the HVAC housing (this is the cabin filter access door).
- 🔸On the left and right edges of this cover there are small locking tabs.
- 🔸Press both tabs inward with your fingers or gently with the flat trim removal tool (plastic), then pull the cover straight toward you to remove it.
Step 5: Remove the old cabin air filter
- 🔸Note the direction of the arrow marked “AIR FLOW” or “UP” on the existing filter frame. This must match when installing the new one.
- 🔸Grip the front edge of the filter and slide it straight out. It may bend slightly; that’s normal. Do not force it.
- 🔸Use the shop towel or small vacuum to remove any leaves or debris inside the filter cavity. Do not push debris further inside.
Step 6: Install the new cabin air filter
- 🔸Find the “AIR FLOW” or “UP” arrow on the new filter.
- 🔸On your Accord, the filter usually installs with the AIR FLOW arrow pointing down (toward the floor). Confirm this matches the direction of the old filter you removed.
- 🔸Slide the new filter into the slot, keeping it flat and centered so the edges do not fold or crush.
- 🔸Make sure it sits fully seated in the housing with no gaps on the sides. Gaps let unfiltered air bypass.
Step 7: Reinstall the cabin filter access door
- 🔸Align the bottom edge of the plastic access cover with the lower tabs or slots on the HVAC housing.
- 🔸Rotate the top of the cover toward the housing until the side clips snap into place.
- 🔸Lightly tug on the cover to confirm it is secure and evenly seated on all sides.
Step 8: Reattach the glove box and damper arm
- 🔸Lift the glove box back up toward its normal position.
- 🔸Push in on both sides again to get the side stops past the dashboard opening, then let them rest back into place so the glove box now opens and closes normally.
- 🔸On the right side, line up the damper arm with its pin on the glove box and press it straight on until it clicks into place.
- 🔸Open and close the glove box several times to make sure it moves smoothly and doesn’t drop too fast.
Step 9: Clean up and re-load the glove box
- 🔸Wipe any dust from the glove box area using the interior trim cleaning wipes.
- 🔸Put your items back into the glove box, keeping heavier items toward the bottom so they don’t stress the door.
✅ After Repair
- 🔸Start the car and turn on the blower fan at low to medium speed. Check for good airflow from the vents.
- 🔸Switch between different vent modes (face, floor, defrost) to confirm air is flowing normally and no unusual noises are present.
- 🔸If you notice a reduced airflow or a rattling sound, reopen the glove box and verify the filter is fully seated and the access door is clipped correctly.
