🔧 Accord - Cabin Air Filter Replacement

Your Accord’s cabin air filter cleans the air going through the heater and A/C. Replacing it helps reduce musty smells, improves airflow, and can help your A/C work better.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.2-0.5 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Turn the ignition OFF and remove the key before working under the dash.
  • ⚠️ Don’t force plastic tabs—use gentle pressure to avoid breaking them.
  • ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for this repair.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Small flashlight

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Cabin air filter - Qty: 1

đź“‹ Before You Begin

  • 🅿️ Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Move the front passenger seat back to give yourself room.
  • Have a trash bag ready—old filters can drop leaves and dust.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open and empty the glove box

  • Open the glove box and remove everything inside so it doesn’t spill.
  • Use a small flashlight to look along the right side of the glove box.

Step 2: Disconnect the glove box damper arm

  • On the right side of the glove box is a small “damper” arm (a small support that slows the glove box from dropping).
  • Use your fingers while wearing nitrile gloves to gently pop the damper arm off its pin/clip.

Step 3: Drop the glove box down

  • Press in on both sides of the glove box (near the upper corners) to clear the stops.
  • Keep pressing the sides inward and let the glove box swing downward.
  • Tip: Press one side at a time if needed.

Step 4: Remove the cabin filter cover

  • Behind the glove box, find the rectangular cabin filter housing.
  • Use your fingers (and small flashlight if needed) to press the tabs on the cover and pull the cover straight off.

Step 5: Pull out the old filter and tray

  • Slide the filter (often in a small tray/frame) straight out toward you.
  • Keep it level so debris doesn’t dump into the housing.

Step 6: Install the new cabin air filter

  • Check the airflow arrow on the new filter.
  • Install it in the same direction as the old one came out (typically the arrow points down on this setup).
  • Slide the filter/tray fully into the housing until it seats.

Step 7: Reinstall the cover and glove box

  • Push the filter cover back on until both tabs click.
  • Lift the glove box back up and press the sides inward again to pass the stops back into place.
  • Reconnect the damper arm on the right side by pressing it back onto its pin/clip.

âś… After Repair

  • Start the car and run the blower fan at different speeds to confirm strong airflow.
  • Switch between fresh air and recirculation to make sure nothing is rubbing or rattling behind the glove box.
  • If you notice a new “whistling” sound, recheck that the filter is fully seated and the cover is snapped in evenly.

đź’° DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $80-$160 (parts + labor)

DIY Cost: $15-$40 (parts only)

You Save: $65-$120 by doing it yourself!

Shop labor rates vary but typically run $100-$150/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 0.3-0.5 hours.
