Step-by-step replacement instructions with tools needed, access paths (footwell or glovebox), and install tips
🔧 Supra - Cabin Air Filter Replacement
Your Supra’s cabin air filter (also called a “microfilter”) cleans the air going through the A/C and heater. Replacing it helps reduce musty smells, improves airflow, and keeps dust/pollen out of the cabin.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.3-0.8 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- 🛑 Turn the ignition OFF and remove the key/fob from the car.
- 🧤 Wear gloves and a mask if you’re sensitive to dust/pollen.
- ⚠️ Use gentle force on trim panels; cold plastic cracks easier.
- 🔌 Battery disconnect is not required for this job.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- Trim removal tool set (plastic)

đź“‹ Before You Begin
- Park your Supra on level ground and set the parking brake.
- Move the passenger seat back to give yourself room to work.
- Run the fan 1 minute, then shut off. This helps dry the box.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Confirm which access style your Supra has
- Use a flashlight and look under the passenger side dash/footwell for a small rectangular filter door.
- If you see a filter door under the dash, follow Path A (Passenger footwell).
- If you do NOT see a filter door there, follow Path B (Behind the glovebox).
Step 2A: Remove the passenger footwell trim panel (Path A)
- Use a trim removal tool set (plastic) to gently pry down the passenger-side lower cover panel.
- If your panel has screws, remove them with a Torx T20 screwdriver.
- Lower the panel carefully and set it aside.
- Plastic tools prevent scratches. A trim tool is a plastic pry tool made to remove panels without damage.
Step 3A: Open the cabin filter access door (Path A)
- Locate the cabin filter housing door (usually a small rectangular cover).
- Release the clips by hand, or remove screws using a Torx T20 screwdriver if equipped.
- Pull the cover straight off and keep it nearby.
Step 4A: Remove the old filter (Path A)
- Slide the filter out slowly with your hands (use nitrile gloves).
- Note the airflow direction arrow printed on the filter frame.
- Use a flashlight to check inside the housing for leaves/debris.
Step 5A: Install the new filter (Path A)
- Insert the new cabin air filter (microfilter) in the same direction as the arrow you noted.
- Make sure the filter seats fully and doesn’t buckle.
Step 6A: Reinstall the cover and trim (Path A)
- Reinstall the filter door until clips click, or tighten screws with a Torx T20 screwdriver until snug.
- Reinstall the footwell trim panel using the trim removal tool set (plastic) to line up clips.
Step 2B: Empty and open the glovebox (Path B)
- Open the glovebox and remove items so nothing falls out.
- Use a flashlight to look for the damper (a small arm on the right side that slows the glovebox).
Step 3B: Release the glovebox stops (Path B)
- Gently push in the glovebox side walls by hand to clear the “stops” and allow the glovebox to drop further.
- If a damper arm is present, disconnect it carefully by hand or with a trim removal tool set (plastic).
- Go slow—don’t force clips.
Step 4B: Remove the cabin filter cover (Path B)
- Behind the glovebox, find the cabin filter housing cover.
- Release clips by hand, or remove screws with a Torx T20 screwdriver or Torx T25 screwdriver if equipped.
- Remove the cover and set it aside.
Step 5B: Replace the filter (Path B)
- Pull the old filter out with nitrile gloves.
- Install the new cabin air filter (microfilter) with the airflow arrow matching the original direction.
- Reinstall the cover and tighten screws with the same Torx driver until snug.
Step 6B: Reassemble the glovebox (Path B)
- Reconnect the damper (if removed) by hand.
- Lift the glovebox back up and pop the stops back into place by gently pushing the sides inward.
- Close the glovebox and confirm it opens/closes smoothly.
âś… After Repair
- Start your Supra and run the blower fan on medium for 30 seconds.
- Switch between fresh air and recirculation to confirm airflow is strong and quiet.
- If you hear a fluttering noise, the filter may be upside down or not seated—recheck the arrow direction.
