🔧 340i - Cabin Air Filter Replacement

Your A/C and heat pull air through a cabin air filter (BMW calls it a microfilter). When it’s dirty, airflow drops and you may get musty smells, foggy windows, and extra blower noise.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.3-0.7 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Work with the engine off and cool; you’ll be near the rear of the engine bay.
  • ⚠️ Keep fingers clear of the wiper linkage/cowl edges; plastic panels can snap.
  • ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for this job.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Trim removal tool
  • Torx T20 screwdriver
  • Small flat-blade screwdriver
  • Flashlight
  • Shop vacuum with crevice tool

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Cabin air filter (microfilter, charcoal/activated carbon recommended) - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
  • Open the hood and have a flashlight ready; the filter sits at the back of the engine bay near the windshield cowl (the plastic panel at the base of the windshield).
  • Take a quick photo before removal.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Remove the rear engine-bay weatherstrip

  • At the back edge of the engine bay (right in front of the windshield), locate the long rubber weatherstrip.
  • Pull it upward with your hands; use a trim removal tool if it’s stuck.

Step 2: Remove the cowl access cover for the microfilter housing

  • On the passenger side at the base of the windshield, find the plastic cowl/microfilter cover.
  • Release the plastic clips using a small flat-blade screwdriver or trim removal tool.
  • If your cover uses screws, remove them with a Torx T20 screwdriver.
  • Lift the cover away and set it aside.

Step 3: Open the microfilter housing

  • Locate the microfilter housing lid (a long, rectangular cover).
  • Unlatch the lid clips by hand; if tight, use a small flat-blade screwdriver gently.

Step 4: Remove the old cabin air filter

  • Slide the old filter straight out.
  • Keep it level to avoid dumping dust/leaves into the housing.
  • Use a flashlight to inspect inside.

Step 5: Clean the housing

  • Use a shop vacuum with crevice tool to remove leaves and dirt from the filter tray.
  • Don’t push debris deeper into the vents.

Step 6: Install the new cabin air filter (correct direction matters)

  • Check the arrow on the filter frame for airflow direction (often marked “AIR FLOW”).
  • Install it the same way the old one came out, fully seated with no buckling.
  • If it won’t slide in smoothly, pull it back out and re-align—don’t force it.

Step 7: Reinstall the housing lid and cowl pieces

  • Reinstall the microfilter housing lid and latch the clips by hand.
  • Reinstall the cowl access cover and snap clips back in place.
  • If equipped, reinstall screws with a Torx T20 screwdriver and tighten snug by hand (do not overtighten into plastic).
  • Press the rubber weatherstrip back into place along the rear edge of the engine bay.

✅ After Repair

  • Start your A/C blower and test all fan speeds. You should notice stronger airflow.
  • Switch between fresh air and recirculation and listen for any rattles (a loose cover/clip will buzz).
  • If there was a musty smell, run A/C for a few minutes; it may take a short drive to fully clear.

💰 DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $120-$220 (parts + labor)

DIY Cost: $25-$60 (parts only)

You Save: $95-$160 by doing it yourself!

Shop labor rates vary but typically run $100-$150/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 0.3-0.7 hours.
