How to Replace the Battery on a 2019 Jeep Grand Cherokee
Step-by-step under-seat main 12V battery change with tools, parts list, torque specs, and safety tips

🔧 Grand Cherokee - Main Battery Replacement
You’ll be replacing the main 12V battery, which on your Grand Cherokee is mounted under the front passenger seat. This restores proper starting, keeps electronics happy, and prevents random warning lights.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 1–1.5 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Always work with the engine off, ignition off, and key fob away from the vehicle.
- ⚠️ You will be working near airbags and wiring under the seat—do not turn the ignition on while the seat connectors are exposed.
- ⚠️ Disconnect the negative (black) battery cable first and reconnect it last to avoid short circuits.
- ⚠️ A battery is heavy; lift with two hands and protect your back.
- ⚠️ Wear eye protection and gloves; battery acid is corrosive.
- ⚠️ If you use a “memory saver” plugged into the OBD port or 12V outlet, make all connections before loosening any battery cables.

- 🔩 Dielectric grease / battery terminal protectant spray - Qty: 1
- 🔩 Battery hold-down bolt (optional replacement) - Qty: 1
- 🔩 Battery tray felt pad or insulator (if damaged) - Qty: 1
📋 Before You Begin
- Park the Grand Cherokee on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
- Turn off all lights and accessories and remove the key fob from the vehicle.
- If using a memory saver, plug it into the OBD port under the driver dash and follow its instructions before touching the battery.
- Slide the front passenger seat fully rearward to expose the front mounting area and battery cover.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Access the under-seat battery
- Slide the passenger seat fully forward using the power seat switch so you can work behind it.
- Use the trim removal tool (plastic) to gently pry off the plastic battery access cover at the rear of the passenger seat base.
- If there are any clips, gently release them with the flathead screwdriver without forcing them.
Step 2: Prepare the area and identify the connections
- Look for the battery terminals: positive usually has a red cover and a plus (+); negative is usually black with a minus (−).
- Move any carpeting or insulation aside by hand to fully expose the battery and the hold-down bracket.
- Take a clear phone photo of everything before disassembly.
Step 3: Disconnect the negative (black) terminal
- Use the 10mm socket and 1/4" ratchet to loosen the nut on the negative (black) terminal clamp.
- Once the nut is loose, twist the clamp gently by hand and lift it straight up off the battery post.
- Wrap the end of the negative cable in a shop rag and tuck it to the side so it cannot spring back to the terminal.
- Torque when reassembling: tighten clamp nut to 5–6 Nm (4–5 ft-lbs), just snug.
Step 4: Disconnect the positive (red) terminal
- Flip open the red plastic cover using the flathead screwdriver if needed.
- Use the 10mm socket and 1/4" ratchet to loosen the nut on the positive clamp.
- Carefully wiggle and lift the positive clamp off the battery post and move it aside, avoiding contact with any metal parts.
- Torque when reassembling: tighten clamp nut to 5–6 Nm (4–5 ft-lbs).
Step 5: Remove the battery hold-down
- Locate the metal or plastic hold-down bracket at the base or side of the battery.
- Use the 13mm socket, 3" extension, and 3/8" ratchet to remove the hold-down bolt.
- Lift the hold-down bracket out and set it aside.
- Torque when reassembling: hold-down bolt to 14–18 Nm (10–13 ft-lbs).
Step 6: Remove the old battery
- Grip the battery with both hands; if it has a handle, use the handle.
- Carefully lift the battery straight up and out; it is heavy, so lift with your legs, not your back.
- Set the battery upright on the ground; do not tip or drop it.
- Have a clear path before lifting the battery out.
Step 7: Clean and inspect the battery tray and cables
- Check the battery tray for corrosion or moisture and wipe it clean with shop rags.
- Use the battery terminal cleaning brush to clean the inside of both terminal clamps until shiny metal is visible.
- If you see heavy corrosion on cables or tray, note it for later repair or replacement.
Step 8: Install the new battery
- Compare the new battery to the old one: same size, same terminal positions, and AGM type.
- Place any battery tray felt pad or insulator on the tray if used.
- Lower the new battery into place, keeping it upright and aligning the positive and negative posts in the same orientation as original.
- Make sure the battery sits flat and fully down in the tray.
Step 9: Reinstall the hold-down bracket
- Position the hold-down bracket over or against the base of the battery.
- Install the hold-down bolt by hand first to avoid cross-threading.
- Use the 13mm socket, extension, and 3/8" ratchet to tighten the hold-down bolt.
- Finish with the torque wrench set to 14–18 Nm (10–13 ft-lbs) so the battery is secure but not crushed.
Step 10: Protect the terminals
- Place the anti-corrosion pads over each battery post (hole in pad over the post).
- Apply a light coat of dielectric grease or battery protectant to the posts and the inside of the cable clamps.
Step 11: Reconnect the positive (red) terminal
- Place the positive clamp straight down onto the positive post.
- Use the 10mm socket and 1/4" ratchet to snug the nut.
- Finish tightening with the torque wrench set to 5–6 Nm (4–5 ft-lbs)—just tight enough that the clamp does not move when twisted by hand.
- Close the red plastic protective cover over the terminal.
Step 12: Reconnect the negative (black) terminal
- Place the negative clamp onto the negative post.
- Use the 10mm socket to snug the nut, then use the torque wrench set to 5–6 Nm (4–5 ft-lbs).
- Check both clamps by trying to twist them by hand; they should not move.
Step 13: Refit covers and seat area trim
- Reposition any carpeting or insulators around the battery by hand.
- Snap the plastic battery access cover back into place using your hands; if needed, help clips with the trim removal tool.
- Slide the passenger seat back to a comfortable position.
Step 14: Power up and check operation
- Bring the key fob into the vehicle.
- Start the engine and verify it cranks normally.
- Check the dash for warning lights; some may appear briefly then clear as modules wake up.
- Reset clock, radio presets, and window auto-up if needed.
✅ After Repair
- Start the engine and let it idle for a few minutes while you check that interior electronics, lights, and HVAC all work.
- Turn the steering wheel slowly lock-to-lock once while stationary to help the steering angle sensor recalibrate if the steering warning appears.
- Drive the Grand Cherokee for 10–15 minutes; some warning lights may clear after a short drive cycle.
- Re-enter radio presets, time, and any seat/mirror memory that was lost.
- If any major warning lights stay on (ABS, airbag, check engine), have the codes scanned.
