š§ Ranger - Battery Replacement
Your Rangerās 12V battery powers starting and all electronics. Replacing it is straightforward, but you must disconnect it safely and then reset the battery monitoring system (BMS) so charging works correctly.

- ā ļø Turn the ignition OFF and keep the key/fob at least 10 feet away.
- ā ļø Wear gloves and safety glassesābattery acid is corrosive.
- ā ļø Disconnect the negative (-) terminal first, reconnect it last.
- ā ļø Do not let a tool bridge between the positive terminal and metal parts.
- ā ļø The battery is heavyālift with your legs, not your back.

- 10mm socket
- 13mm socket
- 1/4" or 3/8" ratchet
- 6" socket extension
- Torque wrench (5ā30 Nm range)
- Trim clip remover
- Battery terminal brush
- Battery carrying strap
- Memory saver 12V device (specialty)
- Safety glasses
- Nitrile gloves

š Before You Begin
- Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
- If you want to keep radio presets/window settings, connect a Memory saver 12V device (specialty) before disconnecting the battery (it supplies low power while the battery is out).
- Open the hood and locate the battery at the front of the engine bay.
šØ Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Access the battery
- Remove any battery cover or intake/trim pieces that block access using a trim clip remover.
- Set all clips/covers aside so you donāt lose them.
Step 2: Disconnect the negative terminal (-) first
- Use a 10mm socket to loosen the negative terminal clamp nut.
- Twist and lift the clamp off the negative post and move it aside so it cannot spring back.
- Negative first helps prevent accidental shorts.
Step 3: Disconnect the positive terminal (+)
- Use a 10mm socket to loosen the positive terminal clamp nut.
- Lift the clamp off the positive post and position it away from the battery.
Step 4: Remove the battery hold-down
- Locate the battery hold-down clamp at the base of the battery.
- Use a 13mm socket, ratchet, and extension to remove the hold-down bolt.
Step 5: Remove the old battery
- Attach a battery carrying strap and lift the battery straight up and out.
- Keep the battery upright to avoid any acid leakage.
Step 6: Clean and prep the terminals
- Use a battery terminal brush to clean corrosion off the cable clamps.
- Install battery terminal anti-corrosion pads on the new battery posts.
Step 7: Install the new battery
- Set the new battery into the tray in the same orientation as the old one.
- Reinstall the hold-down clamp and bolt using a 13mm socket.
- Torque to 8 Nm (71 in-lbs).
Step 8: Reconnect terminals (positive first)
- Install the positive clamp first and tighten with a 10mm socket.
- Torque to 6 Nm (53 in-lbs).
- Install the negative clamp last and tighten with a 10mm socket.
- Torque to 6 Nm (53 in-lbs).
- Spray the terminals with battery terminal protectant spray.
Step 9: Reinstall covers and trim
- Reinstall any battery cover/trim you removed using the trim clip remover as needed.
ā After Repair
- Start your Ranger and confirm it cranks normally and no warning lights stay on.
- Reset the Battery Monitoring System (BMS):
- ā Without a scan tool:

Turn ignition ON (engine OFF), then within 10 seconds:
- Pull the high beam stalk (flash-to-pass) 5 times.
- Press and release the brake pedal 3 times.
- Watch for the battery/charging indicator to flash (reset confirmation).
- ā With a scan tool:
- Use a scan tool (specialty) and run the BMS reset function for your Ranger.
- If windows act odd afterward, cycle each window fully down then fully up to relearn.
