🔧 Ram 2500 - Battery Replacement

On your Ram 2500, the battery sits in the engine bay and is held down by a clamp/bolt. The job is mainly removing the hold-down, swapping the battery, and reconnecting the cables in the correct order to prevent electrical issues.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Turn the truck OFF, remove the key, and keep it away from the vehicle.
  • ⚠️ Wear eye protection and gloves; batteries can vent acid and hydrogen gas.
  • ⚠️ Do not let a tool bridge between the positive terminal and metal parts.
  • ⚠️ Disconnect the negative cable first and reconnect it last to reduce short-circuit risk.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Safety glasses
  • Nitrile gloves
  • 10mm socket
  • 13mm socket
  • Ratchet (3/8")
  • 6" extension (3/8")
  • Torque wrench (3/8" drive)
  • Battery terminal brush
  • Battery strap handle

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • 12V starting battery (correct group size for your Ram 2500) - Qty: 1
  • Battery terminal anti-corrosion pads - Qty: 2
  • Battery terminal protector spray - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • 🅿️ Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
  • Open the hood and let the engine bay cool if it’s hot.
  • If you want to preserve radio/settings, use a 12V memory saver (plugs into OBD-II and supplies keep-alive power).

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Confirm your battery setup

  • Look in the engine bay: do you have one battery or two batteries?
  • Also check the cable clamps: are the terminal clamp nuts 10mm or 13mm?
  • Reply with “single/dual” and “10mm/13mm”.

Step 2: Disconnect the negative terminal first

  • Use a 10mm socket or 13mm socket with a ratchet (3/8") to loosen the negative (-) terminal clamp.
  • Lift the clamp off the post and tuck it aside so it cannot spring back.
  • Negative cable is usually black.

Step 3: Disconnect the positive terminal

  • Use a 10mm socket or 13mm socket with a ratchet (3/8") to loosen the positive (+) terminal clamp.
  • Lift the clamp off and cover it so it can’t touch metal.
  • Positive terminal usually has a red cover.

Step 4: Remove the battery hold-down

  • Use a 13mm socket, ratchet (3/8"), and 6" extension (3/8") to remove the battery hold-down bolt/clamp.
  • Set the hold-down parts aside where you won’t lose them.

Step 5: Remove the old battery

  • Use a battery strap handle and lift the battery straight up and out.
  • Batteries are heavy—lift with your legs, not your back.

Step 6: Clean the tray and terminals

  • Use a battery terminal brush to clean corrosion from the inside of the cable clamps.
  • Wipe out debris in the battery tray so the new battery sits flat.

Step 7: Install the new battery and secure it

  • Set the new battery into the tray in the same orientation as the old one.
  • Reinstall the hold-down using a 13mm socket, ratchet (3/8"), and 6" extension (3/8").
  • Use a torque wrench (3/8" drive) and torque to the factory spec (I’ll give the exact spec after you confirm your hold-down style in Step 1).

Step 8: Reconnect terminals (positive first, negative last)

  • Install anti-corrosion pads on the posts.
  • Reconnect the positive (+) cable first using a 10mm socket or 13mm socket and a ratchet (3/8"), then torque to the factory spec (depends on clamp style).
  • Reconnect the negative (-) cable last using the same tool, then torque to the factory spec.
  • Spray both terminals with battery terminal protector spray.

✅ After Repair

  • Start your Ram 2500 and confirm it cranks strongly.
  • Check that the battery is solidly clamped and the cables cannot rotate by hand.
  • If any warning lights appear, shut off, recheck terminal tightness, and restart.
  • Reset clock/radio presets if you did not use a memory saver.

💰 DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $250-$450 (parts + labor)

DIY Cost: $180-$320 (parts only)

You Save: $70-$150 by doing it yourself!

Shop labor rates vary but typically run $100-$150/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 0.5-1.0 hours.
