🔧 Grand Cherokee - Battery Replacement
Your Grand Cherokee’s main 12V battery powers starting and all electronics. Replacing it is straightforward, but access is tighter than many SUVs because the battery is located under the front passenger seat area, and some Trailhawks also have a second (aux) battery for Stop/Start.
Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 0.8-2.0 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Key off, remove key fob 15+ feet away before starting.
- ⚠️ Disconnect negative (-) first, reconnect negative (-) last.
- ⚠️ Do not tug on the negative cable sensor (IBS). The IBS is the small sensor module on the negative cable; pulling on it can cause electrical faults.
- ⚠️ If your Grand Cherokee has Stop/Start, it may have an aux battery—replace it if weak or if warnings persist.
- ⚠️ Battery is heavy. Lift with both hands and keep it upright (it can vent gas).
- ⚠️ If you lift the vehicle for the aux battery, always support with jack stands.

🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Main 12V battery (AGM, correct fit for Grand Cherokee) - Qty: 1
- Auxiliary 12V battery (Stop/Start equipped only) - Qty: 1
- Battery terminal anti-corrosion protectant - Qty: 1
📋 Before You Begin
- Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
- Open the liftgate or a door and keep it open (so you don’t get locked out).
- Power the passenger seat to a high/forward position before disconnecting the battery (seat switches won’t work after power is off).
- If equipped, turn Stop/Start off with the dash button (optional, but helps prevent odd behavior during testing).
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Confirm whether you have Stop/Start (affects aux battery)
- Look for a “A” with a circular arrow Stop/Start button near the shifter area, or a dash message like “Stop/Start Unavailable.”
- If you’re not sure, tell me if you have that button and I’ll tailor the exact path.
Step 2: Access the main battery under the front passenger seat area
- Use the seat controls to move the passenger seat fully forward and upward (do this before disconnecting power).
- Remove the passenger-side floor mat.
- Use a 10mm socket with a 3/8" ratchet to remove the fasteners from the battery access cover (location: floor area under/near the passenger seat).
- Use a flat trim pry tool to lift the cover carefully.
Step 3: Disconnect the battery (negative first)
- Use a 10mm socket to loosen the negative (-) terminal clamp nut and remove the cable from the post.
- Tip: Twist gently—don’t pry on the IBS.
- Use a 10mm socket to loosen the positive (+) terminal clamp nut and remove the cable from the post.
- If your battery has a vent tube, pull the vent tube off by hand (note its routing so you reinstall it).
- Torque on install: Terminal clamp nuts: 5 Nm (44 in-lb)
Step 4: Remove the main battery hold-down and lift the battery out
- Use a 13mm socket with a 3/8" ratchet and 6" extension to remove the battery hold-down bolt/brace.
- Lift the battery straight up and out with both hands.
- Torque on install: Main battery hold-down: 9 Nm (80 in-lb)
Step 5: Install the new main battery
- Set the new battery into the tray in the same orientation as the old one.
- Reinstall the hold-down using a 13mm socket, then Torque to 9 Nm (80 in-lb).
- Reconnect the vent tube (if equipped).
- Install cables in this order:
- Reconnect positive (+) first using a 10mm socket, then Torque to 5 Nm (44 in-lb).
- Reconnect negative (-) last using a 10mm socket, then Torque to 5 Nm (44 in-lb).
- Apply battery terminal anti-corrosion protectant.
Step 6 (Stop/Start equipped only): Replace the auxiliary battery (if needed)
- If you have Stop/Start and still get warnings after a main battery replacement, the aux battery is often the cause.
- Chock wheels, then lift the right-front corner using a floor jack and support with jack stands.
- Remove the right-front wheel using a 19mm socket.
- Torque on install: Wheel lug nuts: 183 Nm (135 ft-lb)
- Remove the right-front fender liner fasteners using a 7mm socket, 8mm socket, and a trim clip remover tool.
- Disconnect the aux battery terminals using a 10mm socket (negative first, positive second).
- Remove the aux battery hold-down using a 10mm socket or 13mm socket (varies by bracket), swap battery, then reinstall hold-down.
- Torque on install: Aux battery terminal clamp nuts: 5 Nm (44 in-lb)
Step 7: Reinstall covers and trim
- Reinstall the main battery access cover using a 10mm socket.
- Reinstall the fender liner and wheel (if you did the aux battery) using the same sockets/tools listed above.
✅ After Repair
- Start your Grand Cherokee and let it idle for 2–3 minutes. Confirm there are no warning lights related to charging.
- Reset your clock and radio presets if they were lost.
- Cycle the windows fully down/up once if auto-up/down acts strange.
- If Stop/Start remains “Unavailable” for a few drives, the aux battery may be weak or the system may need additional drive cycles to relearn.
💰 DIY vs Shop Cost
Shop Cost: ₹6,000–₹18,000 (parts + labor, main battery; more if aux battery also replaced)
DIY Cost: ₹4,500–₹14,000 (parts only, depending on AGM and aux battery)
You Save: ₹1,500–₹6,000 by doing it yourself!
Shop labor rates vary but typically run ₹800–₹1,500/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 0.8–1.5 hours.
