🔧 Cherokee - Battery Replacement
On your Cherokee, the 12V battery is mounted under the front passenger seat (under the carpet access panel). The job is mostly careful disassembly, then swapping the battery and reconnecting it in the correct order to avoid electrical issues.
Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 0.75-1.5 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Keep the key fob at least 15 feet away so modules go to sleep.
- ⚠️ Disconnect the negative terminal first, reconnect it last to prevent short circuits.
- ⚠️ The seat contains airbag wiring; do not unplug any yellow connectors.
- ⚠️ The battery is heavy—lift with legs, not your back.
- ⚠️ Battery disconnect is required for this job.

📋 Before You Begin

- Turn everything off and open the driver window (handy if the vehicle locks itself).
- Wait 5 minutes after shutting off so computers go to sleep.
- Take a photo of the battery connections.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Access the battery under the passenger seat
- Slide the front passenger seat all the way back using the seat switch.
- Use a trim removal tool to lift the door-sill scuff plate edge enough to free the carpet if needed.
- Fold back the carpet to expose the battery access cover.
- Use a 10mm socket and 3/8" ratchet to remove the access cover fasteners (if equipped), then remove the cover.
- Work slowly to avoid cracking trim.
Step 2: Disconnect the battery (negative first)
- Use a 10mm socket to loosen the negative (-) terminal clamp and remove it from the battery post.
- Move the negative cable aside so it cannot spring back onto the post.
- Use a 10mm socket to loosen the positive (+) terminal clamp and remove it from the battery post.
- If a small vent tube is attached to the battery, pull it off by hand (do not tear it).
- Torque to 6 Nm (53 in-lbs) for the terminal clamp nuts during reassembly.
Step 3: Remove the battery hold-down and lift out the battery
- Use a 13mm socket, 3/8" ratchet, and 3" socket extension to remove the battery hold-down bolt and bracket.
- Lift the battery straight up and out.
- Torque to 20 Nm (15 ft-lbs) for the battery hold-down bolt during reassembly.
- Keep the battery upright to prevent leaks.
Step 4: Install the new battery
- Set the new battery into the tray in the same orientation as the old one.
- Reinstall the hold-down bracket and bolt using a 13mm socket.
- Reconnect the vent tube if your battery uses one.
- Torque to 20 Nm (15 ft-lbs) for the battery hold-down bolt.
Step 5: Reconnect terminals (positive first)
- Install anti-corrosion washers (optional) on the posts.
- Reconnect the positive (+) terminal first and tighten using a 10mm socket.
- Reconnect the negative (-) terminal last and tighten using a 10mm socket.
- Torque to 6 Nm (53 in-lbs) for the terminal clamp nuts.
- Apply battery terminal protectant spray after everything is tight.
Step 6: Reinstall the access cover and carpet
- Reinstall the battery access cover and fasteners using a 10mm socket.
- Fold the carpet back into place and press trim back down by hand.
Step 7: If you removed the passenger seat bolts (only if necessary)
- Use an E14 external Torx socket and torque wrench to reinstall seat mounting bolts.
- Torque to 47 Nm (35 ft-lbs) for the seat mounting bolts.
- Never unplug yellow airbag connectors.
✅ After Repair
- Start the engine and confirm the dash has no warning lights related to low voltage.
- Check that power windows, radio, and interior lights work normally.
- If your Cherokee has Auto Start/Stop and it still shows “Start/Stop Unavailable,” the auxiliary battery may also be weak.
