🔧 Durango - Battery Replacement

On your Durango, the 12V battery is mounted under the front passenger seat. You’ll slide the seat to access the battery cover, then disconnect the cables, swap the battery, and reconnect in the correct order.

Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Keep the key fob at least 20 feet away so the vehicle can’t “wake up” while you work.
  • ⚠️ Wear gloves and safety glasses—battery acid is corrosive and batteries can spark.
  • ⚠️ Disconnect the negative (-) cable first and reconnect it last to reduce short-circuit risk.
  • ⚠️ Do not tug on seat wiring harnesses under the seat.
  • ⚠️ If using a memory saver, follow its instructions carefully to avoid damage.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Safety glasses
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Ratchet
  • 10mm socket
  • 13mm socket
  • 6-inch socket extension
  • Trim panel removal tool
  • Torque wrench (inch-pound)
  • Torque wrench (ft-lb)
  • Battery carrying strap
  • OBD-II memory saver (specialty)

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • 12V AGM battery (H7/94R size) - Qty: 1
  • Battery terminal anti-corrosion spray - Qty: 1
  • Dielectric grease - Qty: 1
  • Battery terminal felt washers (red/green) - Qty: 1

đź“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
  • Turn everything off and close all doors. Wait 3–5 minutes for modules to “go to sleep.”
  • Slide the front passenger seat all the way back, then all the way forward to see where you get best access.
  • If you want to keep radio presets/settings, connect an OBD-II memory saver (specialty) (a device that supplies low current power while the battery is disconnected).

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Access the battery under the passenger seat

  • Use the seat switch to slide the passenger seat to a position that gives you the most room to work.
  • Use a trim panel removal tool to carefully pop up/remove the under-seat battery cover/panels.
  • Good light helps—take a quick photo first.

Step 2: Disconnect the negative (-) cable first

  • Use a 10mm socket with a ratchet to loosen the negative (-) terminal clamp nut.
  • Lift the negative clamp off the battery post and tuck it aside so it cannot spring back.
  • Torque to 5 Nm (44 in-lbs) when reinstalling.

Step 3: Disconnect the positive (+) cable

  • Use a 10mm socket with a ratchet to loosen the positive (+) terminal clamp nut.
  • Lift the positive clamp off the battery post and position it safely away from the battery.
  • Torque to 5 Nm (44 in-lbs) when reinstalling.

Step 4: Disconnect the battery vent tube (if equipped)

  • Look for a small plastic tube connected to the side of the battery.
  • Pull it straight out by hand (no tools usually needed). Don’t crush or kink it.

Step 5: Remove the battery hold-down

  • Use a 13mm socket, ratchet, and 6-inch socket extension to remove the battery hold-down bolt(s) at the base of the battery.
  • Set the hold-down and bolt(s) aside where they won’t get lost.
  • Torque to 12 Nm (106 in-lbs) when reinstalling.

Step 6: Lift out the old battery

  • Attach a battery carrying strap and lift the battery straight up and out.
  • Batteries are heavy—use proper lifting form and go slow.

Step 7: Install the new battery

  • Set the new AGM H7/94R battery into the tray in the same orientation as the old one.
  • Reconnect the vent tube (if your old battery had one).
  • Reinstall the hold-down using a 13mm socket and ratchet, then Torque to 12 Nm (106 in-lbs).

Step 8: Reconnect cables (positive first, negative last)

  • Install the positive (+) clamp first. Use a 10mm socket and ratchet, then Torque to 5 Nm (44 in-lbs).
  • Install the negative (-) clamp last. Use a 10mm socket and ratchet, then Torque to 5 Nm (44 in-lbs).
  • Spray battery terminal anti-corrosion spray on the terminals (light coat).
  • Apply a small amount of dielectric grease to help resist moisture/corrosion.

Step 9: Reinstall covers and set the seat back

  • Snap the under-seat cover/panels back in place by hand.
  • Use the seat switch to return the passenger seat to your preferred position.

âś… After Repair

  • Start the engine and verify there are no warning messages related to low voltage.
  • Check that headlights, brake lights, power locks, and HVAC blower work normally.
  • If the steering feels “off” right after reconnecting, turn the wheel lock-to-lock once while parked, then drive normally.
  • If you used a memory saver, disconnect it per its instructions after the battery is fully connected.
