🔧 Challenger - Battery Replacement

The battery on your Challenger is located in the trunk on the right side. You’ll remove the trunk trim cover, disconnect the cables (negative first), swap the battery, then reconnect (positive first) to avoid electrical damage.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Wear eye protection and gloves—battery acid is corrosive.
  • Keep metal tools away from both battery posts at the same time to avoid a short.
  • Disconnect the negative (-) cable first and reconnect it last.
  • Do not pull on the cable—loosen the clamp and lift it off the post.
  • If your battery has a vent tube, reconnect it to the new battery (prevents fumes in the trunk).
  • Battery disconnect is recommended for this job.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 10mm socket
  • 13mm socket
  • Ratchet (3/8")
  • 6" extension (3/8")
  • Trim clip removal tool
  • Torque wrench (in-lb or Nm)
  • Battery terminal puller (specialty)
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • 12V battery (AGM recommended, H7/94R size) - Qty: 1
  • Battery terminal anti-corrosion spray - Qty: 1
  • Battery terminal felt washer set - Qty: 1

đź“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground, engine off, key removed, and keep the trunk open.
  • Wait 2–3 minutes after key-off before disconnecting the battery so modules go to sleep.
  • If you want to preserve radio/clock settings, use a 12V memory saver (a small device that powers the car through the OBD port) before disconnecting.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Access the battery in the trunk

  • Open the trunk and move any cargo out of the way.
  • Use a trim clip removal tool to carefully release the right-side trunk trim cover/panel fasteners.
  • Fold the trim back to expose the battery and hold-down bracket.

Step 2: Disconnect the negative (-) cable

  • Use a 10mm socket with a ratchet (3/8") to loosen the negative terminal clamp nut.
  • Lift the negative cable off the battery post and position it so it cannot spring back onto the post.
  • If it’s stuck, don’t pry hard. Use a battery terminal puller (specialty) (it presses the clamp off without damaging it).
  • When reinstalling later: Torque to 6 Nm (53 in-lbs).

Step 3: Disconnect the positive (+) cable

  • Use a 10mm socket to loosen the positive terminal clamp nut.
  • Lift the positive cable off the battery post and tuck it safely aside.
  • When reinstalling later: Torque to 6 Nm (53 in-lbs).

Step 4: Remove the battery vent tube (if equipped)

  • Look for a small plastic/rubber tube connected to the side of the battery.
  • Pull it straight out by hand (no tools usually needed).
  • Don’t forget this on install. It helps vent battery gases outside.

Step 5: Remove the battery hold-down

  • Use a 13mm socket with a ratchet (3/8") and 6" extension (3/8") to remove the hold-down bolt.
  • Remove the hold-down bracket and set it aside.
  • When reinstalling later: Torque to 20 Nm (15 ft-lbs).

Step 6: Remove the old battery and install the new one

  • Lift the battery straight up and out. Batteries are heavy—use your legs, not your back.
  • Place the new battery into the tray in the same orientation as the old one.
  • Reinstall the hold-down bracket and use a 13mm socket to tighten it to Torque to 20 Nm (15 ft-lbs).

Step 7: Reconnect the vent tube and terminals (positive first)

  • Reconnect the battery vent tube to the new battery (if equipped).
  • Install felt washers (optional) and apply battery terminal anti-corrosion spray (optional).
  • Install the positive (+) clamp first and use a 10mm socket to tighten to Torque to 6 Nm (53 in-lbs).
  • Install the negative (-) clamp last and use a 10mm socket to tighten to Torque to 6 Nm (53 in-lbs).

Step 8: Reinstall the trunk trim

  • Position the trunk trim cover back into place.
  • Press clips back in by hand (use the trim clip removal tool only if you need help aligning clips).

âś… After Repair

  • Start the engine and confirm the dash lights behave normally.
  • Set the clock and radio presets if they reset.
  • Verify trunk lights and interior electronics work.
  • If a battery/charging warning stays on after a short drive, recheck terminal tightness and clamp seating.

đź’° DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: ₹15,000-₹28,000 (battery + labor)

DIY Cost: ₹12,000-₹24,000 (battery only)

You Save: ₹3,000-₹4,000 by doing it yourself!

Shop labor rates vary but typically run ₹800-₹1,500/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 0.5-1.0 hours.
