🔧 Battery - Replacement

The battery in your Tacoma is under the hood and can be replaced with basic hand tools. You’ll disconnect the old battery, remove the hold-down, swap the battery, and then reconnect everything in the correct order.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Turn the ignition off and remove the key before starting.
  • Work in a well-ventilated area and keep sparks, flames, and smoking away from the battery.
  • Wear safety glasses and gloves. Battery acid can burn skin and eyes.
  • Disconnect the negative cable first and reconnect it last to reduce the chance of shorting the battery.
  • If the battery is swollen, cracked, or leaking, do not touch it with bare hands.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 10mm wrench
  • 10mm socket
  • Ratchet
  • Battery terminal puller (specialty)
  • Battery brush
  • Gloves
  • Safety glasses

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • 12V battery - Qty: 1
  • Battery terminal protectant spray - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Shut off all lights and accessories.
  • Save radio and clock settings if needed. Battery disconnect may clear some memories.
  • If your Tacoma has aftermarket electronics, make sure you know any reset codes before disconnecting power.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open the hood and locate the battery

  • Pull the hood release inside the cab, then open the hood and secure it.
  • Find the battery on the driver-side front corner of the engine bay.

Step 2: Disconnect the negative cable

  • Use a 10mm wrench to loosen the negative battery terminal clamp.
  • Lift the negative cable off the battery and move it aside so it cannot touch the terminal.
  • Negative first, always.

Step 3: Disconnect the positive cable

  • Use a 10mm wrench to loosen the positive terminal clamp.
  • Remove the cable and keep it away from the battery.

Step 4: Remove the battery hold-down

  • Use a 10mm socket and ratchet to remove the battery hold-down hardware.
  • Lift out the hold-down bracket and set it aside.

Step 5: Remove the old battery

  • Lift the battery straight up and out of the tray. A battery is heavy, so use both hands.
  • If it is stuck, gently wiggle it free. Do not pry against the terminals.

Step 6: Clean the tray and cable ends

  • Use a battery brush to clean corrosion from the terminal clamps.
  • Wipe the battery tray clean and make sure it is dry.
  • Clean contact means better starting.

Step 7: Install the new battery

  • Set the new battery in the tray with the terminals in the same orientation as the old one.
  • Reinstall the hold-down bracket using the 10mm socket.
  • Tighten snugly. Do not crush the battery case.

Step 8: Reconnect the cables

  • Install the positive cable first and tighten it with a 10mm wrench.
  • Install the negative cable last and tighten it with a 10mm wrench.
  • Make sure both terminals are fully seated and cannot rotate by hand.

Step 9: Protect the terminals

  • Spray a light coat of battery terminal protectant spray on both terminals.
  • Close the hood and verify the battery is secure.

✅ After Repair

  • Start the engine and confirm it cranks normally.
  • Check that the dash lights are normal and no warning lamps stay on.
  • Reset the clock and any radio presets if needed.
  • Take a short test drive and recheck that both terminals are tight.
