🔧 XT5 - Battery Replacement
The battery on your XT5 sits in the rear cargo area under the floor panel. You’ll remove the trim/floor cover, disconnect the cables (negative first), swap the battery, reconnect (positive first), and then reset the battery monitoring system so charging and start/stop behavior stays correct.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Keep the key fob at least 10 feet away so the vehicle doesn’t “wake up” while you work.
- ⚠️ Do not let a tool touch both the battery terminal and metal body at the same time.
- ⚠️ Disconnect the negative (-) cable first and reconnect it last to reduce spark risk.
- ⚠️ Batteries are heavy and can leak acid—wear gloves and safety glasses.
- ⚠️ If your battery has a small hose on it, that’s a vent tube—reconnect it to prevent fumes in the cabin.
- ⚠️ Battery disconnect is recommended for this job; you may lose radio presets and window indexing until relearned.

📋 Before You Begin
- Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
- Turn everything off and wait 2-3 minutes before disconnecting the battery.
- If you’re using a memory saver (a small power source that keeps settings alive), connect it to the OBD-II port or 12V outlet per the tool instructions before you disconnect the battery.
- Open the liftgate and keep it open—power liftgate operation may be disabled once the battery is disconnected.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Access the battery compartment
- Open the rear liftgate.
- Lift out the rear cargo floor panel and any storage tray pieces above the battery area.
- Use a trim panel tool to release any clips holding the battery cover (if equipped), then remove the cover.
Step 2: Disconnect the negative (-) battery cable
- Locate the negative (-) terminal (usually marked “-” and/or has a black cable).
- Use a 10mm socket with a 3/8" ratchet to loosen the negative terminal clamp nut.
- Wiggle the clamp up and off the terminal, then tuck it aside so it can’t spring back.
- Tip: Wrap the cable end with a glove.
- Torque to 17 Nm (13 ft-lbs) when reinstalling.
Step 3: Disconnect the positive (+) battery cable
- Locate the positive (+) terminal (marked “+” and/or has a red cover).
- Flip up/remove the red terminal cover if needed.
- Use a 10mm socket with a 3/8" ratchet to loosen the positive terminal clamp nut.
- Remove the clamp from the battery post and move it aside.
- Torque to 17 Nm (13 ft-lbs) when reinstalling.
Step 4: Disconnect the battery vent tube (if equipped)
- If you see a small hose attached to the side of the battery, gently pull it off by hand.
- Do not tear or kink the hose.
Step 5: Remove the battery hold-down
- Use a 13mm socket with a 3/8" ratchet and 6" socket extension to remove the battery hold-down bolt and bracket.
- Set the hold-down parts aside where they won’t get lost.
- Torque to 20 Nm (15 ft-lbs) when reinstalling.
Step 6: Remove the old battery
- Install a battery carrying strap and lift the battery straight up and out.
- Keep it upright the whole time.
Step 7: Install the new battery
- Set the new battery into the tray in the same orientation as the old one.
- Reinstall the hold-down bracket and bolt using the 13mm socket, then tighten with a torque wrench 3/8".
- Torque to 20 Nm (15 ft-lbs).
- Reconnect the vent tube (if equipped) by pushing it back on fully.
Step 8: Reconnect the battery cables (positive first)
- Install felt washers (if used) and lightly coat terminals with battery terminal protector spray.
- Reconnect the positive (+) clamp first and tighten using a 10mm socket.
- Torque to 17 Nm (13 ft-lbs).
- Reconnect the negative (-) clamp last and tighten using a 10mm socket.
- Torque to 17 Nm (13 ft-lbs).
Step 9: Reinstall covers and cargo floor
- Reinstall the battery cover (if equipped).
- Reinstall the storage tray pieces and cargo floor panel.
Step 10: Reset the Battery Monitoring System (BMS)
- Best method: Use a scan tool that supports GM BMS reset. Connect it and perform Battery Sensor Reset / BMS Reset under the powertrain or body module menus.
- If you don’t have a scan tool: Drive normally for a few trips; the system may adapt, but you can see charging/start-stop messages until it relearns.
- If you still get “Battery Not Charging” or start/stop warnings after a day or two, you’ll want the BMS reset done with a scan tool.
✅ After Repair
- Start the engine and confirm there are no warning messages related to charging.
- Test the power liftgate, lights, horn, and radio.
- Reset the clock and radio presets if they were lost.
- If the auto-up/down windows act weird, run each window all the way down and all the way up once to relearn.
- Check the battery area for any loose tools, loose vent tube, or cables rubbing on trim.
