🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Access the battery
- Open the hood and locate the battery in the engine bay.
- Remove any plastic cover or battery cover by hand if equipped.
Step 2: Disconnect the negative terminal
- Use a 10mm wrench to loosen the negative battery terminal clamp.
- Lift the cable off the post and move it aside so it cannot spring back.
- Negative off first.
Step 3: Disconnect the positive terminal
- Use a 10mm wrench to loosen the positive terminal clamp.
- Remove the cable and keep it clear of metal parts.
Step 4: Remove the battery hold-down
- Use a 13mm socket and ratchet with extension bar to remove the battery hold-down bolt or clamp.
- Set the hardware aside for reuse unless it is corroded or damaged.
Step 5: Lift out the old battery
- Use a battery carrying strap to lift the battery straight up and out.
- Keep it level to avoid spilling acid.
- Batteries are heavier than they look.
Step 6: Clean the tray and terminals
- Use a battery terminal brush to clean corrosion from the terminals and cable ends.
- Wipe the battery tray clean before installing the new battery.
Step 7: Install the new battery
- Set the new battery in the tray in the same orientation as the old one.
- Install the hold-down clamp or bolt using a 13mm socket and ratchet.
- Torque to 20 Nm (15 ft-lbs).
Step 8: Reconnect the terminals
- Install the positive cable first and tighten it with a 10mm wrench.
- Install the negative cable last and tighten it with a 10mm wrench.
- Torque to 7 Nm (62 in-lbs) on the terminal clamps if using a torque wrench.
- Make sure both clamps are fully seated and do not twist by hand.
Step 9: Reinstall covers and close up
- Reinstall the battery cover or engine cover if equipped.
- Close the hood securely.
