🔋 Battery - Replacement

Your Jetta uses a 12V battery in the engine bay. Replacing it is straightforward if you disconnect the cables in the correct order and secure the new battery properly. This job also helps prevent electrical damage and lost settings.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1 hour

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Wear safety glasses and gloves. Battery acid can burn skin and eyes.
  • Turn the ignition off, remove the key, and keep the car parked with the parking brake set.
  • Disconnect the negative cable first, then the positive cable.
  • Do not let a wrench touch both battery posts or the body at the same time.
  • Use a battery that matches the original size and terminal layout.
  • If your radio or clock loses memory, reset them after installation.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 10mm socket
  • Ratchet
  • Short extension
  • Battery terminal puller (specialty)
  • Flat-blade trim tool
  • Gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Battery carrier strap

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • 12V battery, H5 / Group 47 size - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Turn off all lights, accessories, and the ignition.
  • Open the hood and make sure you have the radio code or presets if needed.
  • If the battery is weak, avoid leaving the doors open for a long time.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open the battery area

  • Open the hood and locate the battery on the left side of the engine bay.
  • Use a flat-blade trim tool to remove any battery cover or intake cover blocking access.
  • Keep hardware in a small tray.

Step 2: Disconnect the negative cable

  • Use a 10mm socket and ratchet to loosen the negative terminal clamp.
  • Lift the negative cable off the battery post and move it aside so it cannot spring back.
  • Torque to 5 Nm (44 in-lbs) when reinstalling.

Step 3: Disconnect the positive cable

  • Use a 10mm socket to loosen the positive terminal clamp.
  • Remove the positive cable and tuck it away from the battery.
  • Torque to 5 Nm (44 in-lbs) when reinstalling.

Step 4: Remove the battery hold-down

  • Use a 10mm socket and short extension to remove the hold-down clamp or bracket.
  • Lift the bracket out and keep the bolt with the clamp.
  • Torque to 20 Nm (15 ft-lbs) on reassembly.

Step 5: Lift out the old battery

  • Use a battery carrier strap to lift the battery straight up and out.
  • Be careful. A battery is heavy, so lift with your legs, not your back.
  • Set the old battery on a stable surface.

Step 6: Install the new battery

  • Lower the new battery into the tray with the terminals in the same position as the old one.
  • Make sure it sits flat in the tray.
  • Reinstall the hold-down clamp using the 10mm socket.
  • Torque to 20 Nm (15 ft-lbs).

Step 7: Reconnect the positive cable

  • Install the positive cable first using the 10mm socket.
  • Make sure the clamp is fully seated on the post.
  • Torque to 5 Nm (44 in-lbs).

Step 8: Reconnect the negative cable

  • Install the negative cable last using the 10mm socket.
  • Make sure the clamp is tight and cannot rotate by hand.
  • Torque to 5 Nm (44 in-lbs).

Step 9: Reinstall covers and test

  • Reinstall any battery cover or intake cover you removed.
  • Close the hood.
  • Start the car and check for normal electrical operation.

✅ After Repair

  • Set the clock and radio presets if needed.
  • Check that the engine starts normally.
  • Make sure warning lights go out after startup.
  • Dispose of the old battery at a recycling center or parts store.
