🔧 Battery - Replacement

Your Yaris uses a standard 12V battery in the engine bay. Replacing it means disconnecting the old battery, swapping the new one in, and tightening the hold-down and terminals correctly so the car starts reliably.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1 hour

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Turn the ignition OFF and remove the key before starting.
  • Wear safety glasses and gloves. Battery acid can burn skin and eyes.
  • Remove the negative cable first, then the positive cable.
  • Do not let a wrench touch both battery terminals or metal body parts at the same time.
  • Keep sparks, cigarettes, and open flame away from the battery.
  • If your radio or clock has memory presets, they may reset when power is disconnected.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 10mm socket
  • 3/8-inch ratchet
  • Short extension
  • Battery terminal brush
  • Flathead screwdriver
  • Gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Battery carrier strap

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Turn all lights, fan, and accessories off.
  • Open the hood and locate the battery in the engine bay.
  • Make sure the replacement battery matches the original size and terminal layout.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Disconnect the negative cable

  • Use the 10mm socket and 3/8-inch ratchet to loosen the negative terminal clamp.
  • Lift the cable off the battery post and move it aside so it cannot touch the terminal.
  • Negative first prevents accidental shorts.

Step 2: Disconnect the positive cable

  • Use the 10mm socket to loosen the positive terminal clamp.
  • Remove the cable from the battery and keep it clear of metal parts.

Step 3: Remove the battery hold-down

  • Use the 10mm socket, ratchet, and short extension to remove the battery hold-down bracket.
  • Set the fasteners aside in a safe place.

Step 4: Lift out the old battery

  • Use the battery carrier strap to lift the battery straight up and out.
  • The battery is heavy, so keep your back straight and use both hands.

Step 5: Clean the tray and terminals

  • Use the battery terminal brush to clean corrosion from the cable ends.
  • Wipe the battery tray clean before installing the new battery.

Step 6: Install the new battery

  • Set the new battery in the tray with the terminals in the same position as the old one.
  • Reinstall the hold-down bracket and tighten the hardware with the 10mm socket.
  • Tighten snugly, but do not overtighten.

Step 7: Reconnect the positive cable

  • Install the positive cable on the battery post first.
  • Use the 10mm socket to tighten the clamp.
  • Tighten snugly, but do not overtighten.

Step 8: Reconnect the negative cable

  • Install the negative cable last.
  • Use the 10mm socket to tighten the clamp.
  • Tighten snugly, but do not overtighten.

Step 9: Verify operation

  • Start the engine and check that it cranks normally.
  • Confirm the dash lights are normal and no warning lights stay on.

✅ After Repair

  • Check that the battery is secure and does not move in the tray.
  • Verify the terminal clamps are tight.
  • Reset the clock and radio presets if needed.
  • If the engine cranks slowly, recheck terminal tightness and battery fitment.
