šŸ”§ Grand Cherokee - Battery Replacement

Your Grand Cherokee’s main battery is located under the front passenger seat (not under the hood like many cars). Replacing it is mostly careful trim removal and correct ā€œdisconnect/reconnectā€ order so you don’t damage electronics.

Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 1.0-2.0 hours

āš ļø Safety & Precautions

  • āš ļø Keep the key fob at least 20 feet away so modules go to sleep.
  • āš ļø Do not short the battery with tools; remove metal jewelry.
  • āš ļø The negative cable may have an IBS sensor (a current sensor on the negative terminal). Don’t pry on or twist the sensor.
  • āš ļø Battery gases are flammable; no sparks or smoking.
  • āš ļø Battery disconnect is required for this job.

šŸ”§ Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 10mm socket
  • 13mm socket
  • 1/4" ratchet
  • 3/8" ratchet
  • 6" extension
  • Trim removal tool
  • Torque wrench (inch-pound)
  • Torque wrench (foot-pound)
  • Battery terminal cleaning brush
  • Work light
  • Mechanic gloves
  • Safety glasses

šŸ”© Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Main battery (correct-fit, same type as removed) - Qty: 1
  • Battery terminal anti-corrosion pads - Qty: 2
  • Battery terminal protectant spray - Qty: 1
  • Auxiliary battery (if equipped with ESS) - Qty: 1

šŸ“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground, shift to Park, and turn everything off.
  • Open the tailgate or a door you can leave open; once the battery is disconnected, power locks may not work.
  • Wait 5–10 minutes after ignition OFF so computers go to sleep.
  • Quick check: Does your Grand Cherokee have Auto Start/Stop (ESS) on the dash? If yes, it may also have an auxiliary battery and you may need to replace/inspect both.

šŸ”Ø Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Move the passenger seat for access

  • Turn ignition ON and use the seat switch to move the passenger seat all the way back and up for working room.
  • Turn ignition OFF and keep the key fob away from the vehicle.

Step 2: Remove the battery access trim and cover

  • Use a trim removal tool to carefully pop off the plastic trim pieces at the front edge/side of the passenger seat base (they are clipped in).
  • Remove the battery cover/retainer as equipped using a 10mm socket or 13mm socket (fastener size varies by cover style).
  • Tip: Pull straight on clips to avoid breaking them.

Step 3: Disconnect the battery (negative first)

  • Use a 10mm socket to loosen the negative (-) terminal clamp nut and remove the cable from the battery post.
  • Position the removed negative cable so it cannot spring back and touch the terminal.
  • Use a 10mm socket to loosen the positive (+) terminal clamp nut and remove the cable from the battery post.
  • Torque (reinstall later): Torque to 5 Nm (44 in-lbs) for terminal clamp nuts.

Step 4: Remove the battery hold-down

  • Use a 13mm socket, 3/8" ratchet, and 6" extension to remove the battery hold-down bolt/bracket at the base of the battery.
  • Torque (reinstall later): Torque to 10 Nm (89 in-lbs) for the hold-down bolt.

Step 5: Remove the old battery

  • Lift the battery straight up and out carefully. It is heavy; use mechanic gloves for grip.
  • If corrosion is present, use a battery terminal cleaning brush to clean the inside of the cable clamps.

Step 6: Install the new battery

  • Set the new battery in the tray in the same orientation as the old one.
  • Reinstall the hold-down bracket using the 13mm socket and 3/8" ratchet.
  • Torque to 10 Nm (89 in-lbs) using a torque wrench (foot-pound).

Step 7: Reconnect the cables (positive first)

  • Install the positive (+) cable first and tighten using a 10mm socket.
  • Install the negative (-) cable last and tighten using a 10mm socket.
  • Torque to 5 Nm (44 in-lbs) using a torque wrench (inch-pound).
  • Install battery terminal anti-corrosion pads and apply battery terminal protectant spray.

Step 8: Reinstall the cover and trim

  • Reinstall the battery cover/retainer using the 10mm socket or 13mm socket (whichever you removed).
  • Press the seat-base trim panels back into place by hand until all clips seat fully.

Step 9 (If equipped): Auxiliary battery / ESS check

  • If your Grand Cherokee has Auto Start/Stop (ESS), a weak auxiliary battery can cause warning messages even after replacing the main battery.
  • If ESS warnings remain, the auxiliary battery and its connections should be tested and likely replaced as well (location and access vary by equipment).

āœ… After Repair

  • Start the engine and confirm normal cranking and no warning lights.
  • Check that the battery cables are tight by gently trying to rotate each clamp by hand (it should not move).
  • Reset items as needed: clock, radio presets, and one-touch window operation (if it lost memory).
  • If a battery/charging warning remains, the charging system and battery sensor wiring should be scanned for codes.
