🔧 LaCrosse - Battery Replacement

Replacing your A4—

Assumption: Your LaCrosse battery is mounted in the trunk (right side) under the trim cover, which is typical for this model.

You’ll remove the trunk-side covers, disconnect the battery safely (negative first), swap the battery, then reconnect (positive first). This prevents no-start issues and reduces the risk of short circuits.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Keep keys away from the car while working (prevents modules “waking up”).
  • ⚠️ Disconnect the negative (-) cable first and reconnect it last to avoid accidental shorting.
  • ⚠️ Do not let a tool touch both the battery terminal and metal body at the same time.
  • ⚠️ Batteries are heavy and can leak acid; wear gloves and safety glasses.
  • ⚠️ No battery disconnect is strictly required for removal (you are disconnecting it anyway), but do not slam the trunk or pinch cables.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 10mm socket
  • 13mm socket
  • 3/8" ratchet
  • 3" socket extension
  • Trim clip remover
  • Torque wrench (5-30 Nm range)
  • Battery terminal brush
  • Work gloves
  • Safety glasses

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • 12V battery (Group size H6/48, verify label) - Qty: 1
  • Battery terminal anti-corrosion pads - Qty: 2
  • Battery terminal protectant spray - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
  • Turn the car fully off, remove the key/fob from the vehicle, and wait 2-3 minutes.
  • Open the trunk and keep it open while you work.
  • Take a photo of cable routing first.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Access the battery in the trunk

  • Open the trunk and lift out the trunk floor panel if equipped.
  • Use a trim clip remover to carefully pop the fasteners holding the right-side trunk trim access panel.
  • Pull the trim back enough to see the battery, hold-down, and cables.

Step 2: Disconnect the negative (-) battery cable

  • Identify the negative (-) terminal (usually marked “-” and often has a black cable).
  • Use a 10mm socket with a 3/8" ratchet to loosen the negative terminal clamp/bolt.
  • Lift the negative cable off the terminal and tuck it aside so it cannot spring back.
  • Wrap the cable end with a rag if needed.

Step 3: Disconnect the positive (+) battery cable

  • Identify the positive (+) terminal (marked “+”, often under a red cover).
  • Flip open/remove the red protective cover.
  • Use a 10mm socket with a 3/8" ratchet to loosen the positive terminal clamp/bolt.
  • Lift the positive cable off and move it aside safely.

Step 4: Remove the battery hold-down

  • Locate the battery hold-down clamp at the base of the battery.
  • Use a 13mm socket with a 3" socket extension and 3/8" ratchet to remove the hold-down bolt.
  • Remove the hold-down bracket and set it aside.

Step 5: Remove the old battery

  • Carefully lift the battery straight up and out. Batteries are heavy—use both hands.
  • Set the old battery on the ground upright.

Step 6: Clean the tray and terminals

  • Inspect the battery tray for corrosion or moisture. Wipe it clean.
  • Use a battery terminal brush to lightly clean the inside of the cable ends if you see buildup.
  • Install battery terminal anti-corrosion pads onto the terminals (one per terminal).

Step 7: Install the new battery

  • Place the new battery into the tray in the same orientation as the old one.
  • Reinstall the hold-down bracket and bolt using a 13mm socket.
  • Torque to 13 Nm (10 ft-lbs).

Step 8: Reconnect the positive (+) cable, then negative (-)

  • Install the positive (+) cable first, using a 10mm socket to tighten.
  • Torque to 13 Nm (10 ft-lbs).
  • Close the red protective cover over the positive terminal.
  • Install the negative (-) cable last, using a 10mm socket to tighten.
  • Torque to 13 Nm (10 ft-lbs).
  • Lightly apply battery terminal protectant spray to reduce future corrosion.

Step 9: Reinstall trunk trim

  • Reposition the trunk-side trim panel.
  • Press fasteners back in by hand (use the trim clip remover only to align, not to force).
  • Reinstall the trunk floor panel.

✅ After Repair

  • Start the engine and confirm it cranks strongly.
  • Check that the battery warning light is off on the dash.
  • Reset the clock and re-save radio presets if they were lost.
  • Verify trunk lights and power features work normally.
  • If idle is slightly rough, drive 10 minutes.
