🔧 Battery - Replacement

The battery in your Tacoma is under the hood and can be replaced with basic hand tools. This job is straightforward, but you need to disconnect it carefully to avoid short circuits and loss of stored settings.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1 hour

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Turn the ignition off and remove the key before starting.
  • Keep metal tools away from both battery terminals at the same time.
  • Wear safety glasses and gloves. Battery acid can burn skin and eyes.
  • Disconnect the negative terminal first, then the positive terminal.
  • Reconnect the positive terminal first, then the negative terminal.
  • Do not smoke or create sparks near the battery.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 10mm wrench
  • 10mm socket
  • Ratchet
  • Battery terminal brush
  • Gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Memory saver (optional)

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • 12-volt battery - Qty: 1
  • Battery terminal protector spray - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Make sure all lights, accessories, and the ignition are off.
  • If you have a memory saver, connect it before disconnecting the battery.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open the hood and locate the battery

  • Release the hood and secure it open.
  • The battery is in the engine bay on the left side.

Step 2: Disconnect the negative cable

  • Use a 10mm wrench to loosen the negative terminal clamp.
  • Lift the cable off the terminal and move it aside so it cannot touch the battery.

Step 3: Disconnect the positive cable

  • Use a 10mm wrench to loosen the positive terminal clamp.
  • Remove the cable and keep it clear of the battery.

Step 4: Remove the battery hold-down

  • Use a 10mm socket and ratchet to remove the battery hold-down bracket.
  • Lift the bracket out and keep the hardware together.

Step 5: Remove the old battery

  • Lift the battery straight up and out of the tray.
  • Use both hands. Batteries are heavy. Lift with your legs.

Step 6: Clean the battery tray and terminals

  • Use a battery terminal brush to clean corrosion from the cable ends and tray area.
  • Wipe away dirt and moisture before installing the new battery.

Step 7: Install the new battery

  • Place the new battery in the tray with the terminals in the same position as the old one.
  • Reinstall the hold-down bracket and use a 10mm socket to tighten it securely.

Step 8: Reconnect the cables

  • Install the positive cable first and tighten it with a 10mm wrench.
  • Install the negative cable second and tighten it with a 10mm wrench.
  • Torque to snug fit only. Do not overtighten the clamps.

Step 9: Protect the terminals

  • Apply battery terminal protector spray to help slow future corrosion.

✅ After Repair

  • Start the engine and make sure it cranks normally.
  • Check that the dash lights are off and accessories work.
  • If the radio or clock reset, re-enter your settings.
  • Recheck the terminal tightness after a short drive.
