🔧 Canyon - Battery Replacement
On your Canyon, the 12V battery powers starting and all vehicle electronics. Replacing it is straightforward, but the key is disconnecting and reconnecting the terminals in the correct order to avoid damage.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Wear eye protection; batteries can vent acid and gas.
- ⚠️ Key OFF, remove key/fob from the truck, and wait 2 minutes before disconnecting (lets modules go to sleep).
- ⚠️ Disconnect negative (-) first and reconnect it last to reduce short-circuit risk.
- ⚠️ Do not let a tool touch the positive terminal and metal body parts at the same time.
- ⚠️ No battery disconnect is strictly required beyond removing cables, but keep doors closed and lights off to reduce electrical load.

- Wait about 2 minutes after key-off before touching battery cables.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Access the battery
- Open the hood and locate the battery in the engine compartment.
- If there’s a cover or intake ducting blocking access, release clips with a small flat-blade screwdriver and move it aside.
Step 2: Disconnect the negative (-) cable
- Use a 10mm socket with a 3/8" ratchet to loosen the negative terminal clamp.
- Lift the cable off and tuck it aside so it cannot spring back onto the post.
- Negative off first prevents accidental shorts.
Step 3: Disconnect the positive (+) cable
- Use a 10mm socket to loosen the positive terminal clamp.
- Remove the cable and position it so it can’t touch metal parts.
Step 4: Remove the battery hold-down
- Find the battery hold-down clamp at the base of the battery.
- Use a 13mm socket, 6" extension, and 3/8" ratchet to remove the hold-down bolt and clamp.
Step 5: Remove the old battery
- Wearing nitrile gloves, lift the battery straight up and out.
- Batteries are heavy; keep your back straight and lift with your legs.
Step 6: Clean and prep the connections
- Use a battery terminal brush to clean corrosion from the cable clamps.
- If you’re installing felt washers, slide on anti-corrosion felt battery terminal washers now.
- Lightly coat the posts/clamps with dielectric grease (thin film only).
Step 7: Install the new battery
- Set the new battery into the tray in the same orientation as the old one.
- Reinstall the hold-down clamp and bolt using a 13mm socket.
- Tighten with a torque wrench: Torque to 9 Nm (80 in-lbs).
Step 8: Reconnect the positive (+) cable
- Install the positive clamp onto the positive post.
- Use a 10mm socket to tighten.
- Tighten with a torque wrench: Torque to 15 Nm (11 ft-lbs).
Step 9: Reconnect the negative (-) cable
- Install the negative clamp onto the negative post.
- Use a 10mm socket to tighten.
- Tighten with a torque wrench: Torque to 15 Nm (11 ft-lbs).
Step 10: Protect and reassemble
- Spray terminals with battery terminal protectant spray.
- Reinstall any covers/ducts you moved using the small flat-blade screwdriver as needed for clips.
✅ After Repair
- Start your Canyon and confirm it cranks normally and the charging system light is off.
- Check that headlights, horn, and HVAC blower work normally.
- If power windows lost “auto” function: raise the window fully, hold the switch up for 3 seconds, then lower fully and hold for 3 seconds.
- If the check engine light appears after battery replacement, recheck terminal tightness and cleanliness, then scan for codes if it stays on.
