🔋 Battery - Replacement

Your F-150 uses a standard under-hood 12V battery. Replacing it is straightforward, but Ford battery monitoring needs a reset so the charging system can relearn the new battery. If you skip that step, you may get charging issues or a battery light later.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1 hour

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Wear safety glasses and gloves. Battery acid and corrosion can burn skin and eyes.
  • Keep sparks, cigarettes, and open flames away from the battery.
  • Turn the ignition off and remove the key/fob from the vehicle.
  • Disconnect the negative cable first and reconnect it last to reduce short-circuit risk.
  • Use a memory saver only if you know how to connect it correctly.
  • The battery is heavy. Lift with both hands and keep it upright.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 10mm socket
  • 1/4-inch ratchet
  • 10mm wrench
  • Battery terminal puller (specialty)
  • Battery carry strap
  • Safety glasses
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Baking soda and water solution
  • Wire brush

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Make sure all lights, accessories, and the ignition are off.
  • Open the hood and locate the battery on the engine bay side.
  • If your truck has an aftermarket radio or electronics, use a memory saver only if properly installed.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Disconnect the negative battery cable

  • Use a 10mm wrench or 10mm socket to loosen the negative terminal clamp.
  • Lift the negative cable off the battery post and tuck it aside so it cannot spring back.
  • Keep the cable away from metal.

Step 2: Disconnect the positive battery cable

  • Use a 10mm wrench or 10mm socket to loosen the positive terminal clamp.
  • Remove the positive cable and move it aside.
  • If there is a cover over the positive terminal, remove it first.

Step 3: Remove the battery hold-down

  • Use a 10mm socket and 1/4-inch ratchet to remove the hold-down fastener.
  • Lift out the hold-down bracket and keep the hardware together.
  • Do not let the battery tip.

Step 4: Remove the old battery

  • Use a battery carry strap to lift the battery straight up and out.
  • Keep it level to avoid spilling any residue.
  • Place it on a flat surface away from the work area.

Step 5: Clean the tray and terminals

  • Use a wire brush and baking soda and water solution to clean corrosion from the tray and cable ends.
  • Wipe the area dry before installing the new battery.
  • Clean metal helps the new battery work better.

Step 6: Install the new battery

  • Lower the new battery into the tray with the terminals in the same position as the old one.
  • Reinstall the hold-down bracket using the 10mm socket and 1/4-inch ratchet.
  • Torque to 8-10 Nm (71-89 in-lbs).

Step 7: Reconnect the positive cable first

  • Use a 10mm wrench or 10mm socket to tighten the positive terminal clamp.
  • Torque to 5-6 Nm (44-53 in-lbs).

Step 8: Reconnect the negative cable last

  • Use a 10mm wrench or 10mm socket to tighten the negative terminal clamp.
  • Torque to 5-6 Nm (44-53 in-lbs).

Step 9: Reset the battery monitoring system

  • With the ignition off, press the brake pedal five times.
  • Turn the key to the run position without starting the engine.
  • Press the brake pedal three times.
  • This helps the truck relearn the new battery condition.
  • Done correctly, the hazard lights may flash.

✅ After Repair

  • Start the engine and confirm normal crank speed.
  • Check that the battery warning light is off.
  • Verify the radio, clock, and power windows work normally.
  • Inspect both terminals to make sure they are tight.
  • Recheck for corrosion or any loose cables after your first drive.
