🔧 K900 - Battery Replacement

You’ll remove the old 12V battery and install a new one with the correct size and terminal orientation. Doing it carefully prevents electrical damage and avoids losing settings.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Turn ignition OFF, remove the smart key, and keep it at least 10 ft away from the car.
  • ⚠️ Do not let tools touch both battery terminals (or terminal to body metal) at the same time.
  • ⚠️ Disconnect negative (-) first and reconnect negative (-) last to reduce short-circuit risk.
  • ⚠️ Batteries can vent explosive gas—no sparks, no smoking, work in a ventilated area.
  • ⚠️ Wear gloves and eye protection; battery acid is corrosive.
  • ⚠️ No battery disconnect is strictly required for the job (you’re replacing it), but expect radio/clock/window reset afterward.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 10mm socket
  • 12mm socket
  • 3/8" drive ratchet
  • 6" socket extension
  • Torque wrench (5-60 Nm range)
  • Trim panel removal tool
  • Flashlight
  • Battery terminal puller (specialty)
  • Battery strap/lifting handle
  • Safety glasses
  • Nitrile gloves

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • 12V battery (correct group size for K900) - Qty: 1
  • Battery terminal anti-corrosion pads - Qty: 2
  • Battery terminal protectant spray - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • 🅿️ Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
  • Open the trunk and keep it open while you work.
  • Torque wrench = tool that tightens to an exact setting.
  • Terminal puller = safely lifts a stuck cable end.
  • Assumption: The factory battery is in the trunk (common K900 layout), behind the right-side trunk trim / compartment.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Access the battery in the trunk

  • Use a flashlight to locate the battery area on the right side of the trunk.
  • Remove the trunk floor cover by hand.
  • Use a trim panel removal tool to gently pop out any fasteners and pull back the right-side trunk trim panel enough to fully access the battery.

Step 2: Disconnect the negative (-) battery cable

  • Use a 10mm socket with a 3/8" drive ratchet to loosen the negative (-) terminal clamp nut.
  • Twist the cable end slightly and lift it off the negative post. If it’s stuck, use a battery terminal puller (specialty) (don’t pry hard with a screwdriver).
  • Tuck the negative cable aside so it cannot spring back onto the post.
  • Torque to 6-8 Nm (53-71 in-lbs) when reinstalling.

Step 3: Disconnect the positive (+) battery cable

  • Use a 10mm socket with a 3/8" drive ratchet to loosen the positive (+) terminal clamp nut.
  • Lift the cable end off the positive post and secure it away from the battery.
  • Torque to 6-8 Nm (53-71 in-lbs) when reinstalling.

Step 4: Remove the battery hold-down clamp

  • Use a 12mm socket, 6" socket extension, and 3/8" drive ratchet to remove the hold-down bolt(s) and the clamp.
  • Set the clamp and bolt(s) aside where they won’t get lost.
  • Torque to 18-25 Nm (13-18 ft-lbs) when reinstalling.

Step 5: Remove the old battery

  • Put on nitrile gloves and safety glasses.
  • Use a battery strap/lifting handle to lift the battery straight up and out (it’s heavy—lift with your legs).
  • Place the old battery upright on the ground (not on carpet or seats).

Step 6: Clean and prep the connections

  • Inspect the cable ends for white/green corrosion.
  • Install battery terminal anti-corrosion pads on the battery posts.
  • Apply a light coat of battery terminal protectant spray after the cables are reinstalled.

Step 7: Install the new battery and secure it

  • Set the new battery in the tray in the same orientation as the old one (positive and negative on the correct sides).
  • Reinstall the hold-down clamp using the 12mm socket, 6" socket extension, and 3/8" drive ratchet.
  • Tighten with a torque wrench (5-60 Nm range): Torque to 18-25 Nm (13-18 ft-lbs).

Step 8: Reconnect the battery cables (positive first)

  • Install the positive (+) cable onto the positive post.
  • Use a 10mm socket and 3/8" drive ratchet to tighten, then finish with a torque wrench (5-60 Nm range): Torque to 6-8 Nm (53-71 in-lbs).
  • Install the negative (-) cable onto the negative post.
  • Use a 10mm socket and 3/8" drive ratchet to tighten, then torque: Torque to 6-8 Nm (53-71 in-lbs).
  • Snug is enough—don’t crush the post.

Step 9: Reinstall trunk trim

  • Reposition the trunk trim panel and press clips back in by hand.
  • Reinstall any fasteners using the trim panel removal tool as needed.
  • Reinstall the trunk floor cover.

✅ After Repair

  • Start the car and confirm normal cranking and no warning messages.
  • Set the clock and radio presets if they were lost.
  • Initialize power windows if needed: with the engine running, fully raise each window and keep holding the switch up for 2-3 seconds.
  • Verify trunk release, door locks, and lights work normally.
  • Take the old battery to a parts store for recycling (core return).

💰 DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: ₹7,000-₹16,000 (battery + labor)

DIY Cost: ₹6,000-₹14,000 (battery only)

You Save: ₹1,000-₹2,500 by doing it yourself!

Shop labor rates vary but typically run ₹800-₹2,000/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 0.5-1.0 hours.
