🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Loosen the negative cable

• Use a 10mm wrench to loosen the negative battery terminal clamp.
• Remove the negative cable from the battery post and move it aside so it cannot touch the battery.
• Negative first, always.

Step 2: Loosen the positive cable

• Use a 10mm wrench to loosen the positive battery terminal clamp.
• Remove the positive cable and keep it away from the battery.

Step 3: Remove the battery hold-down

• Use an 8mm socket and ratchet to remove the battery hold-down bolt.
• Take out the hold-down bracket and set it aside.

Step 4: Lift out the old battery

• Lift the battery straight up and out of the tray. A battery is heavy, so use both hands.
• If it is stuck, gently wiggle it free. Do not pry against the case.

Step 5: Clean the tray and terminals

• Use a wire brush to clean corrosion from the cable ends and battery tray area.
• If needed, use baking soda and water to neutralize corrosion. Keep it off painted surfaces.
• Clean connections help starting.

Step 6: Install the new battery

• Set the new battery into the tray with the terminals in the same position as the old one.
• Reinstall the hold-down bracket and tighten it with an 8mm socket.
• Tighten securely; do not overtighten.

Step 7: Reconnect the positive cable

• Install the positive cable onto the positive post.
• Use a 10mm wrench to tighten the clamp until snug.

Step 8: Reconnect the negative cable

• Install the negative cable onto the negative post.
• Use a 10mm wrench to tighten the clamp until snug.
• Torque to snug fit only; battery terminal clamps are not typically torqued to a published spec.

Step 9: Verify operation

• Start the truck and confirm normal cranking.
• Check that dash lights are normal and no warning messages remain.
• Inspect the terminals to make sure they are tight and not moving.
