šŸ”§ Battery - Replacement

Replacing the battery on your Grand Cherokee is mainly about safe power-down, accessing the battery (often under the passenger seat), and swapping it without damaging the battery sensor on the negative cable. I’ll walk you through it step-by-step and call out the common ā€œgotchasā€ like the vent tube and memory loss.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours

āš ļø Safety & Precautions

  • āš ļø Turn ignition OFF, remove the key/fob, and keep it at least 10 feet away so modules go to sleep.
  • āš ļø Wait 3-5 minutes before disconnecting the battery to avoid electrical spikes.
  • āš ļø Disconnect the negative (-) terminal first and reconnect it last.
  • āš ļø Do not pull or twist the sensor on the negative cable (battery current sensor/IBS).
  • āš ļø Batteries can vent explosive gas—no sparks, no smoking, and wear eye protection.
  • āš ļø If your Grand Cherokee has two batteries (main + auxiliary for Stop/Start), replace/follow procedures carefully to avoid warning lights.

šŸ”§ Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 10mm socket
  • 13mm socket
  • 1/4" ratchet
  • 3/8" ratchet
  • 6" socket extension
  • Trim panel tool
  • Torque wrench (in-lb or Nm)
  • Battery terminal brush
  • Shop rags
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses

šŸ”© Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • 12V main battery (match OE size from label, often H7/94R) - Qty: 1
  • Battery terminal anti-corrosion pads - Qty: 2
  • Battery terminal protectant spray - Qty: 1

šŸ“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
  • Open a window or keep a door unlocked (battery swap can lock you out on some vehicles).
  • Confirm battery location: on many Grand Cherokees it’s under the front passenger seat behind a plastic cover.
  • If you want to save radio presets, you can use a memory saver. Optional for most DIYers.

šŸ”Ø Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Power down the vehicle

  • Turn the ignition OFF and remove the fob from the vehicle.
  • Wait 3-5 minutes so the computers go to sleep.

Step 2: Access the battery (common location: under passenger seat)

  • Slide the passenger seat all the way forward and raise it up if it’s power adjustable.
  • Use a trim panel tool to remove the battery access cover (pry gently).
  • If your battery is under the hood instead, open the hood and locate the battery on the passenger side area.

Step 3: Disconnect the negative (-) terminal first

  • Use a 10mm socket and 1/4" ratchet to loosen the negative (-) terminal clamp.
  • Lift the clamp off the battery post and tuck it aside so it can’t spring back.
  • The negative cable often has a sensor—don’t pry on it.
  • Torque to OEM spec

Step 4: Disconnect the positive (+) terminal

  • Use a 10mm socket and 1/4" ratchet to loosen the positive (+) terminal clamp.
  • Lift it off and position it away from the battery.
  • Torque to OEM spec

Step 5: Remove the battery hold-down

  • Use a 13mm socket, 3/8" ratchet, and 6" socket extension to remove the hold-down bolt(s) and bracket.
  • Set the bracket and bolt(s) aside where they won’t get lost.
  • Torque to OEM spec

Step 6: Disconnect the battery vent tube (if equipped)

  • Look for a small vent hose on the side of the battery.
  • Pull it off gently by hand (use a shop rag for grip if needed).

Step 7: Remove and replace the battery

  • Lift the old battery out carefully. Batteries are heavy—use safe lifting posture.
  • Place the new battery in the tray in the same orientation.
  • Reconnect the vent tube to the new battery (if your old one had it).

Step 8: Reinstall hold-down, then reconnect terminals (positive first)

  • Reinstall the hold-down bracket using a 13mm socket and 3/8" ratchet.
  • Reconnect positive (+) first using a 10mm socket.
  • Reconnect negative (-) last using a 10mm socket.
  • Torque to OEM spec
  • Use a battery terminal brush if the clamps/posts are crusty before tightening.

Step 9: Protect terminals and reassemble covers

  • Install battery terminal anti-corrosion pads (if using) and apply battery terminal protectant spray.
  • Reinstall the battery cover using the trim panel tool (press clips back in).

āœ… After Repair

  • Start the engine and confirm it cranks strongly.
  • Check for warning lights. If you see battery/charging messages, shut it off and recheck terminal tightness.
  • Reset clock and radio presets if needed.
  • If your Grand Cherokee has Stop/Start and it shows errors after replacement, the auxiliary battery may also be weak.

šŸ’° DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $250-$450 (parts + labor)

DIY Cost: $180-$320 (parts only)

You Save: $70-$130 by doing it yourself!

Shop labor rates vary but typically run $100-$150/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 0.5-1.0 hours.
