How to Replace the Battery on a 2014 Chevrolet Equinox (12V)
Step-by-step battery swap with tools list, safety tips, and terminal/hold-down torque specs

🔧 Equinox - Battery Replacement
Your Equinox’s 12V battery powers the starter and all electronics. Replacing it is straightforward, but the order you disconnect/reconnect the cables matters to prevent damage and sparks.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Work with the engine OFF, key out, and lights/accessories OFF.
- ⚠️ Do not let a tool touch both the battery terminal and metal body parts at the same time.
- ⚠️ Always disconnect the negative (-) cable first and reconnect it last.
- ⚠️ Batteries can vent gas; avoid sparks/flames and wear eye protection.
- ⚠️ If the battery has a vent tube, reconnect it exactly as found.

📋 Before You Begin
- Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Locate the battery and remove any covers
- Open the hood and locate the battery in the engine bay.
- If your Equinox has a battery cover, remove it by hand (no tools) or use a 10mm socket if it’s bolted.
Step 2: Disconnect the negative (-) cable first
- Use a 10mm socket to loosen the negative terminal clamp nut.
- Twist and lift the clamp off the negative post, then tuck the cable aside so it cannot spring back.
- If the clamp is stuck, use a battery terminal puller (specialty) (a small puller that separates a stuck terminal safely).
- Torque to 17 Nm (13 ft-lbs) when reinstalling this clamp.
Step 3: Disconnect the positive (+) cable
- Use a 10mm socket to loosen the positive terminal clamp nut.
- Lift the clamp off the positive post and move it aside.
- Torque to 17 Nm (13 ft-lbs) when reinstalling this clamp.
Step 4: Remove the battery hold-down
- At the base of the battery, remove the hold-down bolt using a 13mm socket with a 6" extension and 3/8" ratchet.
- Remove the hold-down bracket and set it aside.
- Torque to 20 Nm (15 ft-lbs) when reinstalling the hold-down bolt.
Step 5: Lift out the old battery
- Wear protective gloves and safety glasses.
- Lift the battery straight up and out. Batteries are heavy—use good posture.
- Keep it level to prevent leaks.
Step 6: Clean the tray and terminals
- Inspect the battery tray for corrosion and debris; wipe it clean.
- Use a battery terminal brush to clean the inside of both cable clamps if there is white/green buildup.
Step 7: Install the new battery
- Place the new battery into the tray in the same orientation as the old one.
- Reinstall the hold-down bracket and tighten with a 13mm socket.
- Torque to 20 Nm (15 ft-lbs).
Step 8: Reconnect cables (positive first, negative last)
- Install anti-corrosion pads on the posts (if using).
- Reconnect the positive (+) clamp first and tighten using a 10mm socket.
- Torque to 17 Nm (13 ft-lbs).
- Reconnect the negative (-) clamp last and tighten using a 10mm socket.
- Torque to 17 Nm (13 ft-lbs).
- Apply battery terminal protectant spray after everything is tight.
✅ After Repair
- Start your Equinox and confirm it cranks normally with no warning messages.
- Check that headlights, horn, and power locks work.
- Reset the clock and radio presets if they were lost.
- If the power window auto feature acts up, run the window fully down and fully up once to re-learn.
