🔋 Battery Replacement

Replacing the battery on your Silverado is a straightforward job. The main goal is to remove the old battery safely, clean the connections, and install the new one with the correct hold-down and terminal order.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1 hour

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Turn the ignition off and remove the key/fob from the vehicle.
  • Wear safety glasses and gloves. Battery acid can burn skin and eyes.
  • Disconnect the negative cable first and reconnect it last to reduce spark risk.
  • Keep metal tools away from both battery terminals at the same time.
  • If the battery is swollen, leaking, or cracked, handle it carefully and recycle it properly.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 10mm socket
  • Ratchet
  • 10mm wrench
  • Battery terminal puller (specialty)
  • Battery brush
  • Gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Memory saver (optional)

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • 12-volt battery - Qty: 1
  • Battery terminal protectant - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Make sure the ignition is off and all accessories are shut down.
  • If you want to preserve radio presets and seat settings, connect a memory saver before disconnecting the battery.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open the hood and locate the battery

  • Open the hood and secure the prop rod.
  • The battery is in the engine compartment on your Silverado.
  • Look for the red positive cover.

Step 2: Disconnect the negative cable

  • Use a 10mm socket and ratchet to loosen the negative terminal clamp.
  • Lift the negative cable off the battery post and move it aside so it cannot touch metal.

Step 3: Disconnect the positive cable

  • Open the red cover on the positive terminal.
  • Use a 10mm socket to loosen the positive clamp.
  • Remove the positive cable and keep it clear of the battery.

Step 4: Remove the battery hold-down

  • Use a 10mm socket and ratchet to remove the battery hold-down hardware.
  • Keep the bolts and clamp together so nothing gets lost.

Step 5: Lift out the old battery

  • Carefully lift the battery straight up and out of the tray.
  • Use both hands. Batteries are heavy.
  • Bend your knees, not your back.

Step 6: Clean the tray and terminals

  • Use a battery brush to clean corrosion from the terminals if needed.
  • Wipe the battery tray clean before installing the new battery.

Step 7: Install the new battery

  • Set the new battery into the tray with the terminals in the same position as the old one.
  • Install the hold-down hardware with a 10mm socket.
  • Torque to 18 Nm (13 ft-lbs).

Step 8: Reconnect the positive cable

  • Install the positive cable first using a 10mm socket.
  • Make sure the clamp sits fully on the post.
  • Torque to 15 Nm (11 ft-lbs).

Step 9: Reconnect the negative cable

  • Install the negative cable last using a 10mm socket.
  • Make sure both terminals are tight and secure.
  • Torque to 15 Nm (11 ft-lbs).

Step 10: Apply protectant and close up

  • Apply a small amount of battery terminal protectant to help slow corrosion.
  • Close the red positive cover.
  • Close the hood.

✅ After Repair

  • Start the engine and verify it cranks normally.
  • Check for warning lights on the dash.
  • Reset radio presets or clock if needed.
  • Drive for a few minutes to confirm normal charging system operation.
