🔋 Sierra 1500 - Battery Replacement
Replacing the battery on your Sierra is a straightforward job. The battery is under the hood, and the main tasks are safely disconnecting the cables, removing the hold-down, and transferring any vent or cover parts to the new battery.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1 hour
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- Wear safety glasses and gloves. Batteries can leak acid and give off sparks.
- Turn the ignition off, remove the key/fob from the vehicle, and keep it away from the truck.
- Do not let a wrench touch both battery terminals or a terminal and metal body at the same time.
- Disconnect the negative cable first and reconnect it last.
- If the truck has an exposed battery sensor on the negative cable, handle it carefully.
- Some settings may reset after power loss. Be ready to reset clock, radio presets, and auto windows if needed.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Open the hood and locate the battery
- Use the hood release inside the cab, then secure the hood fully open.
- The battery is in the engine bay on your Sierra, near the front corner of the engine compartment.
Step 2: Disconnect the negative cable
- Use a 10mm socket and 1/4-inch ratchet to loosen the negative terminal clamp.
- Lift the negative cable off the battery post and move it aside so it cannot spring back.
- Always remove negative first.
Step 3: Disconnect the positive cable
- Use the 10mm socket to loosen the positive terminal clamp.
- Remove the positive cable and keep it clear of metal parts.
Step 4: Remove the battery hold-down
- Use the 10mm socket and 6-inch extension to remove the battery hold-down bracket or clamp.
- Set the fasteners aside where they will not be lost.
Step 5: Lift out the old battery
- Lift the battery straight up and out of the tray. A battery is heavy, so use both hands.
- If there is corrosion, use a battery brush to clean the terminals and tray.
Step 6: Install the new battery
- Place the new battery in the tray with the posts in the same orientation as the old one.
- Reinstall the hold-down bracket and tighten it with the 10mm socket.
- Torque to 18 Nm (13 ft-lbs).
Step 7: Reconnect the positive cable
- Install the positive cable first using the 10mm socket.
- Tighten the clamp securely. Do not over-tighten.
Step 8: Reconnect the negative cable
- Install the negative cable last using the 10mm socket.
- Tighten the clamp securely.
- Negative goes on last.
Step 9: Final check
- Make sure both clamps are tight and the battery cannot move.
- Close the hood and start the truck.
✅ After Repair
- Start the engine and confirm it cranks normally.
- Check for warning lights on the dash.
- Reset the clock, radio presets, and any saved settings if needed.
- If a window auto-up/down feature stopped working, reinitialize it using the switch.
