How to Replace the Battery on a 2011-2025 Ram 1500 (Engine: V6 3.6L)
Step-by-step instructions with tools, parts, torque specs, and safety tips for 2011, 2012, 2013
🔋 Battery - Replacement
Your battery is replaced under the hood. This job is straightforward, but the truck’s electronics can react to low voltage, so reconnect the new battery carefully and make sure the terminals are tight and clean.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1 hour
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- Turn the ignition off and remove the key/fob from the vehicle before starting.
- Wear safety glasses and gloves. A battery can leak acid and produce sparks.
- Disconnect the negative terminal first and reconnect it last to reduce short-circuit risk.
- Do not let a wrench touch both battery terminals or a terminal and body metal at the same time.
- If the battery is swollen, cracked, or leaking, handle it carefully and keep it upright.
- No battery disconnect reprogramming is required for this repair, but some settings may reset after power loss.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Disconnect the negative cable
- Use a 10mm wrench to loosen the negative battery terminal clamp.
- Remove the negative cable from the battery post and move it aside so it cannot spring back.

- Set the old battery on a stable surface.
Step 5: Clean the battery tray and terminals
- Use a battery terminal brush to clean corrosion from the cable ends and terminal contact surfaces.
- Wipe the tray clean before installing the new battery.
Step 6: Install the new battery
- Place the new battery in the tray with the terminals in the same position as the old one.
- Reinstall the hold-down hardware with the 13mm socket and ratchet.
- Torque to 15 Nm (11 ft-lbs) if equipped with a hold-down bolt of this type.
Step 7: Reconnect the positive cable
- Install the positive cable on the positive post.
- Use a 10mm wrench to tighten the clamp.
- Torque to snug fit, then an additional small turn; do not overtighten.
Step 8: Reconnect the negative cable

- Use a 10mm wrench to tighten the clamp securely.
- Torque to snug fit, then an additional small turn; do not overtighten.
Step 9: Verify operation

- Make sure no warning lights stay on after startup.
- Check that the battery terminals are stable and the cables do not move by hand.
✅ After Repair
- Reset the clock and any radio presets if needed.
