🔧 Grand Cherokee - Battery Replacement
On your Grand Cherokee, the main battery is mounted under the front passenger seat (inside the cabin), not under the hood. You’ll remove the access cover, disconnect the cables (negative first), swap the battery, then reconnect (positive first) to avoid electrical damage.
Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Wear eye protection and gloves—battery acid and corrosion are hazardous.
- ⚠️ Keep metal tools off both terminals at once to prevent a short.
- ⚠️ Disconnect negative (-) first and reconnect negative (-) last.
- ⚠️ Keep the key fob at least 10+ feet away from the vehicle while working.
- ⚠️ Battery is heavy—lift with your legs, not your back.

You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- Safety glasses

- 10mm socket
- 13mm socket
- Ratchet
- 6-inch socket extension
- Trim removal tool
- Torque wrench (inch-pound)
- Memory saver (OBD-II) (specialty)

🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Main battery (H7/94R size, correct CCA for Grand Cherokee) - Qty: 1
- Battery terminal anti-corrosion felt washers - Qty: 2
- Battery terminal protector spray - Qty: 1
📋 Before You Begin
- Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
- Turn everything off and close doors; wait 5 minutes so modules “go to sleep.”
- If you want to preserve radio presets and clock, connect a memory saver (a small device that keeps power through the OBD-II port).
- Tip: Slide passenger seat fully back first.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Move the passenger seat for access
- Use the seat switches to move the front passenger seat all the way back and up.
- Locate the battery access panel on the floor under/just in front of the seat area.
Step 2: Remove the battery access cover
- Use a trim removal tool to lift/remove the access cover fasteners (if equipped).
- Lift the cover out of the way and set it aside.
Step 3: Disconnect the negative (-) battery terminal
- Use a 10mm socket with a ratchet to loosen the negative (-) terminal clamp nut.
- Wiggle the clamp up and off the terminal (don’t pry hard on the battery post).
- Move the negative cable aside so it cannot spring back to the terminal.
- Torque to 5 N·m (44 in-lbs) when reinstalling.
Step 4: Disconnect the positive (+) battery terminal
- Use a 10mm socket with a ratchet to loosen the positive (+) terminal clamp nut.
- Remove the clamp and position it safely away from the battery.
- Torque to 5 N·m (44 in-lbs) when reinstalling.
Step 5: Remove the battery hold-down
- Locate the battery hold-down at the base of the battery.
- Use a 13mm socket, ratchet, and 6-inch extension to remove the hold-down bolt.
- Remove the hold-down bracket and keep it with the bolt.
- Torque to 12 N·m (106 in-lbs) when reinstalling.
Step 6: Remove the old battery
- Lift the battery straight up and out carefully (it’s heavy).
- Inspect the tray area for corrosion or moisture; wipe it clean.
Step 7: Clean and prep the terminals
- Use a battery terminal cleaning brush to clean the inside of both cable clamps.
- Install anti-corrosion felt washers on the battery posts (one per post).
- Apply battery terminal protector spray after everything is tightened.
Step 8: Install the new battery
- Set the new battery into the tray in the same orientation as the old one.
- Reinstall the hold-down bracket using the 13mm socket, ratchet, and extension.
- Torque to 12 N·m (106 in-lbs).
Step 9: Reconnect the battery terminals (positive first)
- Install the positive (+) clamp first and tighten using a 10mm socket.
- Torque to 5 N·m (44 in-lbs).
- Install the negative (-) clamp last and tighten using a 10mm socket.
- Torque to 5 N·m (44 in-lbs).
- Tip: Tight is good—over-tight can crack the post.
Step 10: Refit the access cover
- Reinstall the battery access cover and fasteners using a trim removal tool as needed.
- Return the passenger seat to your normal position.
Step 11 (If equipped): ESS auxiliary battery note
- Some Grand Cherokee models with Engine Stop/Start (ESS) also have an auxiliary battery under the hood.
- If you have an ESS warning after replacing the main battery, the auxiliary battery may also be weak and need replacement.
✅ After Repair
- Start the engine and confirm normal cranking and no warning lights.
- Reset the clock and radio presets if they were lost.
- Power window reset (if needed): fully lower the window, hold the switch 2 seconds; fully raise, hold 2 seconds.
- If the battery light or charging warnings appear, re-check terminal tightness and clamp seating.
