🔧 Equinox - 12V Battery Replacement

You’ll be replacing the main 12‑volt battery under the hood, which powers starting and all electronics. The job is mostly about removing the old battery safely and installing the new one without shorting anything or losing parts.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 30-60 minutes

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • 🛑 Always remove the negative (–) terminal first and reconnect it last to reduce the risk of sparks.
  • 🛑 Wear safety glasses and gloves; batteries contain acid and can leak or crack.
  • 🛑 Do not place tools across both battery terminals at once; that can cause a dangerous short.
  • 🛑 Keep all flames, cigarettes, and sparks away from the battery; it can emit flammable gas.
  • 🛑 Lift carefully; the battery is heavy. Use both hands or a battery lifting strap.
  • 🛑 Your Equinox does not require computer “battery registration,” but you may lose radio presets and clock settings.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 🧰 10mm socket
  • 🧰 13mm socket
  • 🧰 1/4" or 3/8" drive ratchet
  • 🧰 3" socket extension
  • 🧰 Battery terminal cleaner brush (small brush for cleaning metal terminals)
  • 🧰 Battery terminal puller (specialty) (helps if terminals are stuck)
  • 🧰 Battery carrying strap or handle (specialty)
  • 🧰 Shop towels or rags
  • 🧰 Baking soda and water mix (for neutralizing small corrosion)
  • 🧰 Safety glasses
  • 🧰 Mechanic gloves
  • 🧰 12V memory saver (OBD or cigarette lighter type) (specialty, optional) (keeps presets while battery is disconnected)

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • 🔩 12V starting battery (Group 48/H6, correct for Equinox) - Qty: 1
  • 🔩 Battery terminal protective pads - Qty: 2
  • 🔩 Battery anti-corrosion spray - Qty: 1
  • 🔩 Battery hold-down bolt (if old one is badly rusted) - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • 🚗 Park the Equinox on level ground, shift to PARK, and set the parking brake.
  • 🔑 Turn the ignition completely off and remove the key (or shut off and open the driver door once, if keyless).
  • 📻 If you have a 12V memory saver, plug it into the OBD port or power outlet and connect it following the tool’s instructions.
  • 🧼 Open the hood using the interior hood release, then lift the hood and secure the hood prop rod.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Locate the battery

  • Open the hood and support it safely.
  • The battery on your Equinox is in the front right corner of the engine bay (passenger side), near the fender.
  • It may have a plastic cover on top; you’ll remove that next.

Step 2: Remove the battery cover

  • If there is a plastic top cover over the battery, gently lift it or unclip it by hand.
  • Set the cover aside where it won’t get in the way.
  • Keep track of any small clips you remove.

Step 3: Identify positive and negative terminals

  • The positive (+) terminal usually has a red cover or red cable.
  • The negative (–) terminal is usually black and often goes directly to the body of the car.
  • Double-check symbols on the battery case: + and –.

Step 4: Disconnect the negative (–) terminal

  • Use the 10mm socket and ratchet to loosen the nut on the negative (–) battery clamp.
  • Do not remove the nut completely; just loosen enough so the clamp can move.
  • Twist the clamp gently and lift it off the negative post. If it’s stuck, use the battery terminal puller carefully.
  • Wrap the loose negative cable end in a rag and tuck it away so it cannot spring back to the battery post.
  • Torque when re-installing is “snug by hand” – manufacturer does not list a specific value. Do not overtighten.

Step 5: Disconnect the positive (+) terminal

  • Flip open or slide back the red plastic cover on the positive terminal if present.
  • Use the 10mm socket and ratchet to loosen the positive (+) clamp nut.
  • Lift the clamp off the positive post, again using the battery terminal puller if needed.
  • Move the cable aside so it cannot touch the battery or any metal at the same time as the negative cable.
  • Never let your wrench touch both terminals at once.

Step 6: Remove the battery hold-down clamp

  • At the base of the battery, there is a metal or plastic clamp holding it in place.
  • Use the 13mm socket, extension, and ratchet to remove the hold-down bolt.
  • Lift off the clamp and set it aside.
  • Torque when re-installing is “firm and secure” – GM does not publish a specific spec for this clamp. Do not overtighten to avoid breaking the bracket.

Step 7: Lift out the old battery

  • Position yourself so you can lift straight up; the battery is heavy.
  • Attach the battery carrying strap to the battery posts if you have one, or hold the battery by the built-in handles if present.
  • Carefully lift the battery straight up and out of the tray, keeping it level to avoid any possible acid spill.
  • Set it down on the ground in a safe, flat spot.

Step 8: Clean the battery tray and terminals

  • Inspect the battery tray for dirt or corrosion.
  • If you see white or bluish powdery corrosion, mix baking soda with water and dab it on with a rag to neutralize it.
  • Wipe the tray dry with shop towels.
  • Use the battery terminal cleaner brush to clean the inside of both battery cable clamps until the metal is shiny.
  • Cleaning helps ensure a strong electrical connection.

Step 9: Place the new battery in the tray

  • Check that the new battery’s positive (+) and negative (–) posts are in the same positions as the old one when you set it in the tray.
  • Carefully lower the new battery into the tray, keeping it level.
  • Make sure it sits flat and does not rock.

Step 10: Reinstall the battery hold-down clamp

  • Position the hold-down clamp at the base of the battery as it was before.
  • Install the hold-down bolt by hand to avoid cross-threading.
  • Use the 13mm socket, extension, and ratchet to tighten the bolt until the battery is secure and cannot move.
  • Do not overtighten; just make it firmly snug so the battery stays in place.

Step 11: Install terminal protective pads (optional but recommended)

  • Slide a terminal protective pad over each battery post (one for positive, one for negative) if you are using them.
  • These help reduce future corrosion.

Step 12: Reconnect the positive (+) terminal first

  • Place the positive (+) cable clamp onto the positive battery post.
  • Push it down so it sits fully on the post.
  • Use the 10mm socket and ratchet to tighten the clamp nut until the clamp does not twist on the post when you try to move it by hand.
  • Close the red plastic cover over the positive terminal if equipped.
  • Do not overtighten; snug is enough.

Step 13: Reconnect the negative (–) terminal last

  • Place the negative (–) cable clamp onto the negative battery post.
  • Use the 10mm socket and ratchet to tighten the clamp nut until the clamp does not move when twisted by hand.
  • Again, snug only; do not crush the clamp.

Step 14: Apply anti-corrosion spray

  • Lightly spray the top of both battery terminals and clamps with the battery anti-corrosion spray.
  • Let it dry for a minute or two.

Step 15: Reinstall the battery cover

  • Place the plastic battery cover back over the battery, lining up any clips or tabs.
  • Snap it or press it back into position.

✅ After Repair

  • 🔑 Start the engine and make sure it cranks quickly and runs smoothly.
  • 💡 Check that headlights, interior lights, wipers, and other electrical items work normally.
  • 📻 Reset the clock and any radio presets that were lost.
  • 🔔 Make sure no warning lights stay on in the dash that weren’t there before.
  • 🧪 Over the next couple of days, check the battery terminals to be sure they stay tight and clean.
