🔋 Battery Replacement
Your Equinox uses a standard 12-volt battery under the hood. Replacing it is straightforward, but you need to protect vehicle memory and handle the terminals in the right order so you do not spark or damage electronics.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1 hour
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- Turn the ignition off and remove the key before starting.
- Wear safety glasses and gloves. Battery acid and corrosion can burn skin and eyes.
- Remove the negative terminal first and install it last to reduce spark risk.
- Do not let a wrench touch both battery terminals at once.
- If the battery has a vent tube, reconnect it exactly as removed.
- No battery disconnect is required for this repair, but memory settings may reset.

Step 1: Remove the battery cover, if equipped
- Use your hands to lift off the plastic battery cover or air duct pieces that block access.

Step 2: Disconnect the negative terminal

- Keep the hardware together so it does not get lost.
Step 5: Lift out the battery
- Use a battery strap or lift handle to carefully lift the battery straight up and out.
- The battery is heavy. Keep your back straight and lift with both hands.
Step 6: Clean the tray and terminals
- Use a battery terminal brush to clean any corrosion from the cable ends.
- Wipe the battery tray clean before installing the new battery.
- Clean metal makes better contact.
Step 7: Install the new battery
- Lower the new battery into the tray with the terminals in the same position as the old one.
- Reinstall the hold-down bracket and tighten the bolt with the 10mm socket.
- Tighten securely to 12 Nm (106 in-lbs).
