🔧 Grand Cherokee - Battery Replacement

Replacing the battery restores reliable starting and prevents random electrical issues. On your Grand Cherokee, the battery is in the engine bay, and the job is mostly careful disconnect/reconnect in the correct order.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Turn ignition OFF and remove the key before starting.
  • ⚠️ Wear gloves and safety glasses—battery acid is corrosive.
  • ⚠️ Disconnect the negative terminal first and reconnect it last to reduce short-circuit risk.
  • ⚠️ Do not let a wrench touch both the terminal and metal body parts at the same time.
  • ⚠️ No smoking/sparks near the battery—hydrogen gas can ignite.
  • ⚠️ Battery disconnect is required for this repair.

  • 12V battery (Group 65, top-post) - Qty: 1
  • Battery terminal anti-corrosion felt washers - Qty: 2
  • Battery terminal protectant spray - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • 🧭 Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
  • 🔑 Make sure all lights/accessories are OFF and the key is out.
  • 🧼 If you see white/blue corrosion, plan to clean the terminals after removal.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open the hood and locate the battery

  • Open the hood and find the battery on the right-front area of the engine bay.
  • If there’s a cover/duct in the way, remove any push clips using a trim clip tool.

Step 2: Disconnect the negative (-) battery terminal

  • Use a 10mm socket with a 3/8" drive ratchet to loosen the negative terminal clamp nut.
  • Lift the negative cable off the battery post and move it aside so it cannot spring back.
  • Negative off first = fewer sparks.
  • When reinstalling later: Torque to 44 in-lb (5 N·m).

Step 3: Disconnect the positive (+) battery terminal

  • Use a 10mm socket to loosen the positive terminal clamp nut.
  • Lift the positive cable off and position it safely away from the battery.
  • When reinstalling later: Torque to 44 in-lb (5 N·m).

Step 4: Remove the battery hold-down

  • Remove the hold-down clamp/bolt at the base of the battery using a 13mm socket, 6" extension (3/8" drive), and 3/8" drive ratchet.
  • Set the hold-down parts aside where they won’t be lost.
  • When reinstalling later: Torque to 71 in-lb (8 N·m).

Step 5: Remove the old battery

  • Lift the battery straight up and out. It’s heavy—use good posture and both hands.
  • Place it on the ground upright (don’t tip it).

Step 6: Clean the terminals and tray

  • Use a battery terminal brush to clean the inside of both cable clamps until shiny metal is visible.
  • Wipe the battery tray area with shop rags.
  • Clean metal = better starting.

Step 7: Install the new battery

  • Set the new battery into the tray in the same orientation as the old one.
  • Reinstall the hold-down using a 13mm socket, then tighten with a torque wrench: Torque to 71 in-lb (8 N·m).

Step 8: Reconnect terminals (positive first, negative last)

  • Install anti-corrosion washers onto the battery posts if you’re using them.
  • Reconnect the positive (+) terminal first using a 10mm socket, then tighten with a torque wrench: Torque to 44 in-lb (5 N·m).
  • Reconnect the negative (-) terminal last using a 10mm socket, then tighten with a torque wrench: Torque to 44 in-lb (5 N·m).
  • Spray a light coat of battery terminal protectant spray on the connections.

✅ After Repair

  • 🧪 Start the engine and confirm it cranks normally.
  • 🔎 Check that the battery is secure and cables cannot rotate on the posts.
  • 🕒 Reset the clock and radio presets if they were lost.
  • 🔋 If the battery light stays on, stop and recheck connections for tight/clean contact.
