🔧 CR-V - Battery Replacement

Your CR-V’s 12V battery powers starting and all electronics. Replacing it is straightforward, but you must disconnect and reconnect the cables in the correct order to avoid sparks and electrical damage.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Keep sparks/flames away—battery gas can ignite.
  • ⚠️ Wear eye protection and gloves; battery acid is corrosive.
  • ⚠️ Always remove the negative (-) cable first and install it last.
  • ⚠️ Do not let a tool touch both battery terminals (or terminal to metal) at the same time.
  • ⚠️ Battery disconnect is required for this job.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 10mm socket
  • 1/4" ratchet
  • 6" extension (1/4")
  • 10mm combination wrench
  • Battery terminal brush
  • Small wire brush
  • Shop towels
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Memory saver (specialty)

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • 12V battery (Group Size 51R) - Qty: 1
  • Battery terminal anti-corrosion pads - Qty: 2
  • Battery terminal protectant spray - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground, shift to P, and set the parking brake.
  • Open the hood and keep keys out of the ignition.
  • If you use a memory saver (a small device that keeps radio presets during battery removal), connect it per its instructions before disconnecting the battery.
  • Be ready to reset the clock and radio if power is lost (some Hondas also require an audio anti-theft code after battery disconnect).

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Access the battery

  • Open the hood and locate the battery in the engine bay.
  • If any plastic cover blocks access, remove it by hand.

Step 2: Disconnect the negative (-) terminal

  • Use a 10mm wrench (or 10mm socket with 1/4" ratchet) to loosen the negative terminal clamp nut.
  • Lift the negative clamp off the battery post and tuck it aside so it can’t spring back.
  • Torque on reassembly: Torque to 5 N·m (44 in-lbs)

Step 3: Disconnect the positive (+) terminal

  • Use a 10mm wrench (or 10mm socket) to loosen the positive terminal clamp nut.
  • Lift the positive clamp off and move it aside (avoid letting it touch metal).
  • Torque on reassembly: Torque to 5 N·m (44 in-lbs)

Step 4: Remove the battery hold-down

  • Use a 10mm socket, 1/4" ratchet, and 6" extension to remove the hold-down nuts/bolts.
  • Lift off the hold-down bracket and set it aside.
  • Torque on reassembly: Torque to 10 N·m (7 ft-lbs)

Step 5: Remove the old battery

  • Wiggle the battery free and lift it straight up and out.
  • Set it on the ground upright. Use legs, not your back.

Step 6: Clean the terminals and tray

  • Use shop towels to wipe the battery tray clean.
  • Use a battery terminal brush to clean the inside of each cable clamp until shiny metal is visible.
  • Use a small wire brush to remove corrosion from the hold-down parts if needed.

Step 7: Install the new battery

  • Place the new Group 51R battery into the tray with the terminals oriented the same as the old one.
  • Reinstall the hold-down bracket using the 10mm socket, 1/4" ratchet, and 6" extension.
  • Torque: Torque to 10 N·m (7 ft-lbs)

Step 8: Reconnect terminals (positive first)

  • Install anti-corrosion pads (if using) onto the battery posts by hand.
  • Reconnect the positive (+) clamp first and tighten using a 10mm wrench.
  • Torque: Torque to 5 N·m (44 in-lbs)
  • Reconnect the negative (-) clamp last and tighten using a 10mm wrench.
  • Torque: Torque to 5 N·m (44 in-lbs)
  • Spray terminal protectant using battery terminal protectant spray.

Step 9: Final check

  • Confirm both clamps are fully seated and don’t rotate by hand.
  • Confirm the battery is secure and cannot move.
  • Remove tools from the engine bay and close the hood.

✅ After Repair

  • Start the engine and verify normal cranking speed and no warning lights.
  • Reset the clock.
  • If the radio shows “CODE,” enter the audio anti-theft code (if equipped).
  • Reset driver’s window auto-up (if it stops working): with the engine on, use the window switch to fully lower, then fully raise, then hold the switch up for ~2 seconds.
  • Let it idle 5 minutes to stabilize.

💰 DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $220-$420 (parts + labor)

DIY Cost: $140-$260 (parts only)

You Save: $80-$160 by doing it yourself!

Shop labor rates vary but typically run $100-$150/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 0.5-1.0 hours.
