🔧 Battery - Replacement

Your Sierra uses a conventional 12-volt battery mounted under the hood. Replacing it is straightforward, but you need to disconnect it in the correct order and make sure the new battery is secured tightly before driving.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1 hour

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Turn the ignition off and remove the key fob from the vehicle before starting.
  • Wear safety glasses and gloves. Battery acid and corrosion can irritate skin and eyes.
  • Do not let a wrench touch both battery terminals at once. That can create a short circuit.
  • Keep sparks, cigarettes, and open flames away from the battery.
  • If the battery has a vent tube, transfer it to the new battery if equipped.
  • No battery registration is required on this Sierra.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 10mm socket
  • Ratchet
  • Short extension
  • Battery terminal puller (specialty)
  • Battery terminal cleaning brush
  • Memory saver (optional)
  • Safety glasses
  • Mechanic gloves
  • Battery strap or lifting handle

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • 12-volt battery - Qty: 1
  • Anti-corrosion battery terminal washers - Qty: 2

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Turn all accessories off, including lights and blower fan.
  • If you use a memory saver, connect it before disconnecting the battery.
  • Open the hood and locate the battery on the right side of the engine bay.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Disconnect the negative cable

  • Use a 10mm socket and ratchet to loosen the negative terminal clamp.
  • Remove the negative cable from the battery and move it aside so it cannot spring back.
  • Negative first prevents accidental shorts.

Step 2: Disconnect the positive cable

  • Use a 10mm socket to loosen the positive terminal clamp.
  • Remove the positive cable and keep it away from the battery.

Step 3: Remove the battery hold-down

  • Use a 10mm socket, ratchet, and short extension to remove the battery hold-down hardware.
  • Lift out the clamp or bracket that secures the battery.

Step 4: Remove the old battery

  • Use a battery strap or lifting handle to lift the battery straight up and out of the tray.
  • Be careful. Batteries are heavy.

Step 5: Clean the tray and terminals

  • Use a battery terminal cleaning brush to clean corrosion from the cable ends.
  • Wipe the battery tray clean before installing the new battery.
  • Clean connections help starting and charging.

Step 6: Install the new battery

  • Set the new battery into the tray with the terminals in the same position as the old one.
  • Install the hold-down bracket and tighten it with a 10mm socket.
  • Torque to 17 Nm (12.5 ft-lbs).

Step 7: Reconnect the cables

  • Install the positive cable first and tighten it with a 10mm socket.
  • Then install the negative cable and tighten it with a 10mm socket.
  • Torque to 6 Nm (53 in-lbs) for the terminal clamps.

Step 8: Final check

  • Make sure both terminals are tight and cannot rotate by hand.
  • Make sure the battery cannot move in the tray.
  • Close the hood and start the engine to confirm normal operation.

✅ After Repair

  • Start the truck and let it idle for a minute.
  • Check that the dash lights are normal and no battery warning stays on.
  • Reset the clock and any presets if needed.
  • If you used a memory saver, verify that saved settings stayed intact.
