🔋 Silverado 1500 - Battery Replacement

Your battery is located under the hood, and replacement is straightforward on your Silverado. You’ll disconnect the old battery, remove the hold-down, swap the battery, and reconnect everything in the correct order.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Turn the ignition off and remove the key before starting.
  • Wear gloves and safety glasses; battery acid can burn skin and eyes.
  • Keep metal tools away from both battery terminals at the same time. A short circuit can cause sparks and damage.
  • Disconnect the negative cable first, then the positive cable.
  • Reconnect the positive cable first, then the negative cable.
  • If your Silverado has radio presets or other memory settings, they may reset during battery disconnect.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 10mm wrench
  • 13mm socket
  • Ratchet
  • Extension bar
  • Battery terminal puller
  • Battery terminal cleaner
  • Gloves
  • Safety glasses

🔩 Required Parts

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on a level surface and set the parking brake.
  • Turn all accessories off: lights, radio, heater, and charging devices.
  • Make sure the ignition is fully off and the key is removed.
  • Open the hood and locate the battery on the driver side area of the engine bay.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Disconnect the negative cable

  • Use a 10mm wrench to loosen the negative battery terminal nut.
  • Remove the negative cable from the battery post and move it aside so it cannot touch the terminal.
  • Always remove the negative cable first.

Step 2: Disconnect the positive cable

  • Use a 10mm wrench to loosen the positive terminal nut.
  • Remove the positive cable from the battery post and keep it clear of the battery.

Step 3: Remove the battery hold-down

  • Use a 13mm socket, ratchet, and extension bar to remove the battery hold-down bolt.
  • Lift off the hold-down bracket and set it aside.

Step 4: Lift out the old battery

  • Carefully lift the battery straight up and out of the tray.
  • Battery is heavy, so use both hands and keep it upright.

Step 5: Clean the tray and terminals

  • Use a battery terminal cleaner to clean the cable ends if needed.
  • Check the tray for corrosion, dirt, or damage and clean it before installing the new battery.
  • A clean connection helps starting power.

Step 6: Install the new battery

  • Set the new battery into the tray in the same orientation as the old one.
  • Reinstall the hold-down bracket with the 13mm socket, ratchet, and extension bar.
  • Torque to 17 Nm (13 ft-lbs).

Step 7: Reconnect the cables

  • Install the positive cable first and tighten it with a 10mm wrench.
  • Install the negative cable second and tighten it with a 10mm wrench.
  • Make sure both clamps are fully seated and do not move by hand.

Step 8: Verify operation

  • Close the hood and start the engine.
  • Check that the dash lights, radio, and accessories work normally.
  • Confirm the engine cranks quickly and starts without hesitation.

✅ After Repair

  • Check the battery terminals again after the first drive to make sure they stayed tight.
  • If the engine runs rough or warning lights appear, scan for stored codes.
  • Reset radio presets and clock if needed.
