🔧 Grand Cherokee - Battery Replacement

Your Grand Cherokee’s 12-volt battery is located under the front passenger seat, not under the hood. This repair involves moving the seat, disconnecting the old battery safely, installing the new one, and making sure the electrical systems wake up correctly afterward.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 30-60 minutes

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Always remove the negative battery cable first to reduce the chance of sparks or short circuits.
  • ⚠️ Keep metal tools away from both battery terminals at the same time.
  • ⚠️ The battery is heavy. Lift with both hands and keep it upright.
  • ⚠️ Do not smoke or create sparks near the battery.
  • ⚠️ Your Grand Cherokee has power seats and many electronic modules. Do not force the seat once power is disconnected.
  • ⚠️ Battery disconnect is required for this repair.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 10mm socket
  • 13mm socket
  • 3/8-inch ratchet
  • 6-inch socket extension
  • Battery terminal puller (specialty)
  • Battery carry strap (specialty)
  • Battery terminal cleaning brush
  • Digital memory saver (specialty)
  • Safety glasses
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Shop towels

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • AGM battery, Group H7 / 94R - Qty: 1
  • Battery terminal protectant - Qty: 1
  • Battery terminal anti-corrosion washers - Qty: 1 set

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park your Grand Cherokee on level ground.
  • Shift to Park and set the parking brake.
  • Open a door before disconnecting the battery so you do not accidentally lock yourself out.
  • Move the front passenger seat fully rearward and raise it as high as possible before disconnecting power.
  • If using a digital memory saver, plug it into the OBD-II port before disconnecting the battery. A memory saver supplies low voltage to help retain radio presets and module memory.
  • Turn the ignition fully OFF and remove the key from the vehicle area.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Access the Battery

  • Use the power seat switch to slide the front passenger seat fully rearward.
  • Lift the front edge of the passenger seat floor cover by hand.
  • Fold the carpeted cover back to expose the battery compartment.
  • Use shop towels to wipe away loose dirt around the battery area.
  • Tip: Take a photo first.

Step 2: Disconnect the Negative Cable

  • Find the negative terminal. It is marked with a minus sign - and usually has a black cable.
  • Use a 10mm socket, 3/8-inch ratchet, and 6-inch socket extension to loosen the negative terminal clamp nut.
  • Twist the clamp gently by hand and lift it off the battery post.
  • If the clamp is stuck, use the battery terminal puller (specialty). A terminal puller lifts the clamp without damaging the battery post.
  • Move the negative cable aside so it cannot spring back and touch the battery.

Step 3: Disconnect the Positive Cable

  • Find the positive terminal. It is marked with a plus sign + and usually has a red cover.
  • Open the red protective cover by hand.
  • Use a 10mm socket, 3/8-inch ratchet, and 6-inch socket extension to loosen the positive terminal clamp nut.
  • Lift the positive cable off the battery post.
  • Keep the positive cable away from metal seat brackets and the negative cable.

Step 4: Remove the Battery Hold-Down

  • The hold-down keeps the battery from moving during driving.
  • Use a 13mm socket, 3/8-inch ratchet, and 6-inch socket extension to remove the battery hold-down bolt.
  • Remove the hold-down bracket by hand and set it aside.
  • Do not drop the bolt into the battery compartment.

Step 5: Remove the Old Battery

  • Attach the battery carry strap (specialty) to the old battery if it does not have a handle. A carry strap helps you lift the heavy battery safely.
  • Lift the battery straight up and out of the floor compartment.
  • Keep the battery upright at all times.
  • Place the old battery on cardboard or a stable surface.
  • Tip: Batteries are heavier than they look.

Step 6: Clean the Cable Ends

  • Use the battery terminal cleaning brush to clean the inside of both cable clamps.
  • Use shop towels to wipe the battery tray area clean.
  • If you see white or green crust, that is corrosion. Wear nitrile gloves and avoid touching it with bare skin.

Step 7: Install the New Battery

  • Lower the new AGM battery, Group H7 / 94R into the tray using the battery carry strap (specialty).
  • Make sure the positive and negative posts are facing the same direction as the old battery.
  • Confirm the battery sits flat in the tray.
  • Reinstall the hold-down bracket by hand.
  • Use a 13mm socket, 3/8-inch ratchet, and 6-inch socket extension to tighten the hold-down bolt.
  • Torque to 15 Nm (11 ft-lbs).

Step 8: Connect the Positive Cable First

  • Install the battery terminal anti-corrosion washers onto the battery posts if included.
  • Place the positive cable clamp onto the positive battery post.
  • Push the clamp fully down by hand.
  • Use a 10mm socket, 3/8-inch ratchet, and 6-inch socket extension to tighten the positive terminal clamp nut.
  • Torque to 5 Nm (44 in-lbs).
  • Close the red protective cover by hand.

Step 9: Connect the Negative Cable Last

  • Place the negative cable clamp onto the negative battery post.
  • Push the clamp fully down by hand.
  • Use a 10mm socket, 3/8-inch ratchet, and 6-inch socket extension to tighten the negative terminal clamp nut.
  • Torque to 5 Nm (44 in-lbs).
  • Apply battery terminal protectant lightly to both terminals.

Step 10: Reinstall the Floor Cover

  • Fold the carpeted battery cover back into place by hand.
  • Make sure the cover sits flat and does not pinch the battery cables.
  • Use the seat switch to move the passenger seat back to a normal position.

✅ After Repair

  • Start your Grand Cherokee and let it idle for 2-3 minutes.
  • Check that the battery warning light turns off after startup.
  • Turn the steering wheel slowly full-left, then full-right, then center. This helps the steering angle system relearn after power loss.
  • Set the clock if it reset.
  • Check radio presets and power window operation.
  • If the auto-up window feature does not work, hold the window switch up for 2 seconds after the glass fully closes to relearn it.
  • Recycle the old battery at a parts store or battery recycler. Do not throw it in household trash.
