🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Open the battery area
- Open the hood and locate the battery on the front left side of the engine bay.
- Check for any cover or shield and remove it by hand if equipped.
Step 2: Disconnect the negative cable
- Use a 10mm wrench to loosen the negative cable clamp.
- Remove the negative cable and move it aside so it cannot touch the terminal.
- Always disconnect negative first.
Step 3: Disconnect the positive cable
- Use a 10mm wrench to loosen the positive cable clamp.
- Remove the positive cable and keep it away from metal parts.
Step 4: Remove the battery hold-down
- Use a 13mm socket and ratchet to remove the battery hold-down fastener.
- Lift the hold-down bracket out and keep the hardware together.
Step 5: Remove the old battery
- Lift the battery straight up and out of the tray.
- Use both hands. It is heavy.
- Inspect the tray for corrosion, dirt, or acid residue.
Step 6: Clean and prep the tray
- Use a battery brush to clean the cable ends if they are corroded.
- Wipe the tray clean and make sure the new battery will sit flat.
- Clean terminals help the new battery last longer.
Step 7: Install the new battery
- Set the new battery in the tray with the terminals in the same position as the old one.
- Reinstall the hold-down bracket.
- Use a 13mm socket to tighten the hold-down fastener.
- Torque to 13 Nm (115 ft-lbs).
Step 8: Reconnect the positive cable
- Install the positive cable first.
- Use a 10mm wrench to tighten the clamp.
- Torque to snug, do not over-tighten.
Step 9: Reconnect the negative cable
- Install the negative cable last.
- Use a 10mm wrench to tighten the clamp.
- Torque to snug, do not over-tighten.
Step 10: Final check
- Make sure both terminals are tight and the battery cannot move.
- Reinstall any cover you removed.
- Close the hood.
