🔋 Battery Replacement - Battery Change

Your Silverado uses a standard 12-volt battery located under the hood. Replacing it is straightforward, but you need to disconnect it in the correct order and make sure the terminals are clean and tight when the new battery goes in.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1 hour

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Turn the ignition off and remove the key before starting.
  • Wear safety glasses and gloves. Battery acid can burn skin and eyes.
  • Keep sparks, flames, and cigarettes away from the battery.
  • Disconnect the negative cable first, then the positive cable.
  • Reconnect the positive cable first, then the negative cable.
  • A battery is heavy. Lift it carefully to avoid injury.
  • If the battery hold-down is corroded, handle it carefully.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 10mm wrench
  • 13mm socket
  • Ratchet
  • Battery terminal brush
  • Gloves
  • Safety glasses

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Battery terminal cleaner spray - Qty: 1
  • Battery terminal protectant - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Make sure all lights, accessories, and the ignition are off.
  • Open the hood and secure it properly.
  • Save radio presets and any learned settings if needed. Some memory settings may reset.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Locate the battery

  • Open the hood and find the battery on the driver-side front area of the engine bay.
  • Check for any loose items or covers around it before starting.

Step 2: Disconnect the negative cable

  • Use the 10mm wrench to loosen the negative terminal clamp.
  • Remove the negative cable from the battery and set it aside so it cannot touch the terminal.

Step 3: Disconnect the positive cable

  • Use the 10mm wrench to loosen the positive terminal clamp.
  • Remove the positive cable and keep it clear of the battery.

Step 4: Remove the battery hold-down

  • Use the 13mm socket and ratchet to remove the battery hold-down clamp or bracket.
  • Lift the hold-down hardware out and keep track of all bolts and parts.

Step 5: Remove the old battery

  • Lift the battery straight up and out of the tray.
  • Use both hands; batteries are heavier than they look.

Step 6: Clean the tray and terminals

  • Use the battery terminal brush to clean any corrosion from the cable ends.
  • Clean the battery tray and hold-down hardware if needed.

Step 7: Install the new battery

  • Set the new battery into the tray in the same orientation as the old one.
  • Install the hold-down bracket using the 13mm socket.
  • Torque to 18 Nm (13 ft-lbs) for the battery hold-down.

Step 8: Reconnect the battery cables

  • Connect the positive cable first and tighten it with the 10mm wrench.
  • Connect the negative cable second and tighten it with the 10mm wrench.
  • Torque to snug, then an additional small turn by hand only. Do not overtighten.

Step 9: Apply protection and close up

  • Apply battery terminal protectant to the terminals if desired.
  • Make sure both clamps are fully seated and secure.
  • Close the hood.

✅ After Repair

  • Start the engine and make sure it cranks normally.
  • Check that dash lights are normal and no battery warning is present.
  • If the radio or clock reset, re-enter your settings.
  • Inspect the terminals after a short drive to confirm they stay tight.
