🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Open the hood and locate the battery
- Use the hood release inside the cab, then secure the hood with the prop rod if equipped.
- Find the battery in the engine compartment.
Step 2: Disconnect the negative cable
- Use an 8mm wrench to loosen the negative terminal clamp.
- Remove the negative cable from the battery and tuck it aside so it cannot spring back and touch the terminal.
- Negative first, always.
Step 3: Disconnect the positive cable
- Use an 8mm wrench to loosen the positive terminal clamp.
- Remove the positive cable and keep it clear of the battery.
Step 4: Remove the battery hold-down
- Use a 10mm wrench to remove the battery hold-down bolt or bolts.
- Lift out the hold-down bracket and set it aside.
Step 5: Remove the old battery
- Lift the battery straight up and out of the tray. A battery is heavy, so use both hands.
- Use a battery terminal brush to clean corrosion from the cable ends and tray if needed.
Step 6: Install the new battery
- Set the new battery into the tray in the same direction as the old one.
- Reinstall the hold-down bracket using a 10mm wrench.
- Torque to snug fit; do not overtighten and crack the battery case.
Step 7: Reconnect the cables
- Attach the positive cable first using an 8mm wrench and tighten it snugly.
- Attach the negative cable last using an 8mm wrench and tighten it snugly.
- Apply battery terminal protectant spray to the terminals if desired.
- Positive first, negative last.
Step 8: Close up and check operation
- Make sure both terminals are tight and the battery does not move in the tray.
- Close the hood and start the engine.
✅ After Repair
- Verify the engine starts normally.
- Check that dash lights are off after startup.
- Reset any lost clock, radio, or memory settings if needed.
- If power windows or automatic features act odd, cycle them fully up and down once.
