🔧 Battery - Replacement
Your battery swap is straightforward, but Volkswagen can be sensitive to battery changes. If the replacement battery is a different type or capacity, the car may need battery adaptation with a scan tool so charging stays correct.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1 hour
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- Turn the ignition off and remove the key fob from the vehicle before starting.
- Wear safety glasses and gloves. Battery acid and corrosion can irritate skin and eyes.
- Disconnect the negative terminal first and reconnect it last to reduce spark risk.
- Do not let metal tools bridge the battery terminals or touch body metal at the same time.
- If the battery is heavy or swollen, lift it carefully and keep it upright.
- If your GTI has start-stop and the replacement battery type/capacity changes, battery adaptation may be required.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Open the battery area
- Open the hood and locate the battery at the front of the engine bay.
- Inspect the top of the battery and surrounding area for corrosion or loose wiring.
Step 2: Disconnect the negative cable
- Use a 10mm socket and ratchet to loosen the negative terminal clamp.
- Remove the negative cable and move it aside so it cannot spring back onto the post.
- Negative first, always.
Step 3: Disconnect the positive cable
- Use a 10mm socket to loosen the positive terminal clamp.
- Remove the positive cable and keep it clear of the battery.
Step 4: Remove the battery hold-down

- Lift out the hold-down clamp and set it aside.
Step 5: Remove the battery
- Use a battery carrier strap to lift the battery straight up and out.
- Be careful. The battery is heavy, and acid can still be present.
Step 6: Clean the tray and terminals
- Use a wire brush and battery terminal cleaner to clean corrosion from the tray, clamps, and cable ends.
- Wipe the area clean before installing the new battery.
Step 7: Install the new battery
- Set the new battery into the tray in the same orientation as the old one.
- Reinstall the hold-down hardware with a 10mm socket.
- Torque to 20 Nm (15 ft-lbs).
Step 8: Connect the positive cable

- Torque to 6 Nm (53 in-lbs).
Step 9: Connect the negative cable
- Install the negative terminal last and tighten it with a 10mm socket.
- Torque to 6 Nm (53 in-lbs).
Step 10: Final check
- Make sure both terminals are tight and cannot rotate by hand.

- Close the hood.
✅ After Repair
- Start the engine and confirm normal cranking and idle.
- Check that no warning lights stay on after a short drive.
- If the battery is a different type or capacity, perform battery adaptation with a scan tool.
