🔋 XC90 - Battery Replacement

This covers the main 12V battery replacement on your XC90. On this model, the battery is mounted in the cargo area, so the job is more involved than a typical hood-mounted battery swap.

Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Turn the ignition fully off and keep the key/fob away from the vehicle.
  • Open and close the tailgate before disconnecting power if needed, because power loss can affect some electronic functions.
  • Do not let tools bridge the positive and negative battery terminals.
  • Use eye protection and gloves. Battery acid and corrosion can irritate skin and eyes.
  • Disconnect the negative terminal first, and reconnect it last.
  • If your vehicle has a battery monitoring system, a reset may be needed after installation.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 10mm socket
  • Ratchet
  • Short extension
  • Trim panel tool
  • Battery terminal brush
  • Memory saver (optional)
  • Safety glasses
  • Gloves
  • Torque wrench

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • 12V battery - Qty: 1
  • Battery terminal protectant spray - Qty: 1
  • Battery hold-down hardware - Qty: 1 if damaged

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Open the tailgate before disconnecting the battery.
  • Turn off lights, HVAC, radio, and accessories.
  • If using a memory saver, connect it before removing the battery.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Access the battery

  • Open the tailgate and remove the cargo floor panel.
  • Use a trim panel tool to lift any cargo trim covers over the battery area.
  • Remove the battery cover if equipped.

Step 2: Disconnect the negative terminal

  • Use a 10mm socket and ratchet to loosen the negative terminal clamp.
  • Lift the negative cable off the battery and move it aside so it cannot spring back.

Step 3: Disconnect the positive terminal

  • Use a 10mm socket and ratchet to loosen the positive terminal clamp.
  • Remove the positive cable and keep it away from metal parts.

Step 4: Remove the battery hold-down

  • Use a 10mm socket, ratchet, and short extension to remove the battery hold-down fastener.
  • Lift out the hold-down bracket.

Step 5: Remove the old battery

  • Carefully lift the battery straight up. Batteries are heavy, so use both hands.
  • Keep it upright.

Step 6: Clean the tray and terminals

  • Use a battery terminal brush to clean corrosion from the cable ends if needed.
  • Wipe the tray clean and check for acid damage or loose hardware.

Step 7: Install the new battery

  • Set the new battery in the tray in the same orientation as the old one.
  • Reinstall the hold-down bracket and tighten it securely.
  • Torque to 10 Nm (7 ft-lbs) if your hold-down uses a standard clamp fastener.

Step 8: Reconnect the terminals

  • Install the positive cable first and tighten it with a 10mm socket.
  • Install the negative cable last and tighten it with a 10mm socket.
  • Torque to 6 Nm (53 in-lbs) for the terminal clamps if applicable.

Step 9: Reassemble the cargo area

  • Reinstall the battery cover and cargo floor panel.
  • Make sure nothing pinches the cables.

✅ After Repair

  • Start the vehicle and confirm normal cranking and no warning lights.
  • Check the clock, radio presets, and power window auto-up/down functions.
  • If a battery or charging message stays on, a scan tool may be needed to clear faults.
  • Drive the vehicle for a short trip to verify proper charging.
