🔧 Battery - Replacement

Your Accord uses a 12-volt battery under the hood. Replacing it is straightforward, but you must disconnect it in the correct order to avoid shorting the electrical system and to prevent damage to the body control electronics.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1 hour

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Turn the ignition fully off and remove the key before starting.
  • Wear safety glasses and gloves. Battery acid can burn skin and eyes.
  • Do not let a wrench touch both battery terminals at the same time.
  • Disconnect the negative terminal first, then the positive terminal.
  • Install the positive terminal first, then the negative terminal.
  • If the battery has any swelling, leaking, or cracks, handle it carefully and recycle it properly.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 10mm socket
  • 1/4-inch ratchet
  • Battery terminal puller (specialty)
  • Battery strap or carry handle
  • Safety glasses
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Memory saver (optional)
  • Battery terminal brush

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • 12-volt battery - Qty: 1
  • Battery terminal protectant spray - Qty: 1
  • Battery terminal cleaning pads - Qty: 1 set

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Turn all lights, fan, and accessories off.
  • If using a memory saver, connect it before disconnecting the battery.
  • Open the hood and make sure you can reach the battery securely.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Locate the battery

  • Open the hood and find the battery in the engine bay.
  • Check for a hold-down bracket on top or at the base of the battery.
  • Take a photo before removing anything.

Step 2: Disconnect the negative terminal

  • Use the 10mm socket and 1/4-inch ratchet to loosen the negative cable clamp.
  • Lift the negative cable off the battery terminal and move it aside so it cannot spring back.

Step 3: Disconnect the positive terminal

  • Use the 10mm socket to loosen the positive cable clamp.
  • Remove the positive cable and keep it away from metal parts.

Step 4: Remove the battery hold-down

  • Use the 10mm socket to remove the battery hold-down bracket or clamp.
  • Set the hardware aside in order.

Step 5: Lift out the old battery

  • Use the battery strap or carry handle to lift the battery straight up.
  • Batteries are heavy. Keep your back straight and use both hands.

Step 6: Clean the tray and terminals

  • Use the battery terminal brush to clean corrosion from the cable ends.
  • Wipe the tray clean before installing the new battery.
  • Clean terminals help the new battery last longer.

Step 7: Install the new battery

  • Place the new battery in the tray in the same orientation as the old one.
  • Install the hold-down bracket and tighten it with the 10mm socket.
  • Torque to snug fit only; do not overtighten the battery hold-down.

Step 8: Reconnect the terminals

  • Install the positive cable first and tighten it with the 10mm socket.
  • Install the negative cable second and tighten it with the 10mm socket.
  • Torque to snug fit only; the clamps must be secure, but not crushed.

Step 9: Apply protection

  • Spray battery terminal protectant spray on the terminals if desired.
  • Make sure both cable ends are fully seated and cannot rotate by hand.

✅ After Repair

  • Start the engine and confirm it cranks normally.
  • Check the dash for warning lights.
  • Reset the power windows if needed by fully lowering and fully raising each window.
  • If the radio clock or presets were lost, set them again.
  • Make sure the battery light stays off after startup.
