🔧 Escape - Battery Replacement

Replacing the battery on your Escape is a beginner-friendly job, but the battery is tucked under the cowl area near the windshield, so access is tighter than on many vehicles. You’ll remove the battery hold-down, disconnect the cables in the correct order, swap the battery, then reconnect everything safely.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 30-60 minutes

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Always disconnect the negative battery cable first to reduce the chance of sparks or short circuits.
  • ⚠️ Do not let metal tools touch both battery terminals at the same time.
  • ⚠️ Battery acid can burn skin and eyes, so wear gloves and safety glasses.
  • ⚠️ Keep open flames, cigarettes, and sparks away from the battery.
  • ⚠️ The battery is heavy; lift it straight up with both hands.
  • ⚠️ Battery disconnect is required for this repair.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 10mm socket
  • 8mm socket
  • 13mm socket
  • 3/8-inch drive ratchet
  • 6-inch socket extension
  • Battery terminal puller (specialty)
  • Battery terminal cleaning brush
  • Battery carrier strap (specialty)
  • Torque wrench inch-pound
  • Safety glasses
  • Nitrile gloves

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • 12-volt automotive battery - Qty: 1
  • Battery terminal corrosion protectant - Qty: 1
  • Battery terminal felt washers - Qty: 2

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park your Escape on level ground and shift into Park.
  • Turn the ignition off and remove the key from the vehicle.
  • Open the hood and make sure the engine area is cool.
  • Wait at least 2 minutes after shutting the vehicle off before disconnecting the battery.
  • A battery terminal is the metal clamp connected to the battery post.
  • A hold-down bracket is the clamp that keeps the battery from moving while driving.
  • If your radio presets or clock reset, they can be restored after the battery is installed.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open the Hood and Locate the Battery

  • Use your hands to release the hood latch and raise the hood.
  • The battery is located at the rear of the engine bay near the driver-side cowl area, close to the windshield.
  • Use safety glasses and nitrile gloves before touching the battery.
  • Take a photo first.

Step 2: Remove the Battery Cover or Access Panel

  • Use your hands to remove the battery cover if equipped.
  • If fasteners are present, use an 8mm socket with a 3/8-inch drive ratchet to remove them.
  • Set the cover and fasteners aside where they will not fall into the engine bay.

Step 3: Disconnect the Negative Cable First

  • Find the negative terminal marked with a minus symbol -.
  • Use a 10mm socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to loosen the negative terminal clamp nut.
  • Twist the clamp gently by hand and lift it off the battery post.
  • If it is stuck, use a battery terminal puller. A battery terminal puller lifts the clamp evenly without damaging the battery post.
  • Move the negative cable away from the battery so it cannot spring back and touch the post.

Step 4: Disconnect the Positive Cable

  • Find the positive terminal marked with a plus symbol +.
  • Open the red protective cover by hand if equipped.
  • Use a 10mm socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to loosen the positive terminal clamp nut.
  • Lift the positive cable off the battery post.
  • Move the positive cable aside carefully and do not let it touch metal body parts.

Step 5: Remove the Battery Hold-Down

  • Look at the base of the battery for the hold-down clamp.
  • Use a 13mm socket, 6-inch socket extension, and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to remove the hold-down bolt.
  • Remove the hold-down bracket by hand and place it aside.
  • Do not drop the bolt.

Step 6: Remove the Old Battery

  • Use a battery carrier strap if the battery does not have a built-in handle.
  • Lift the battery straight up and out using both hands.
  • Keep the battery upright at all times to avoid acid leakage.
  • Place the old battery on the ground, not on painted surfaces.

Step 7: Clean the Battery Cable Ends

  • Use a battery terminal cleaning brush to clean the inside of both cable clamps.
  • Clean away any white, blue, or green powdery corrosion.
  • If corrosion is heavy, replace the affected terminal hardware before installing the battery.
  • Clean metal makes better contact.

Step 8: Install the New Battery

  • Use a battery carrier strap or both hands to lower the new battery into the tray.
  • Make sure the positive and negative posts face the same direction as the original battery.
  • Check that the battery sits flat in the tray.

Step 9: Reinstall the Hold-Down Bracket

  • Install the hold-down bracket by hand at the base of the battery.
  • Use a 13mm socket, 6-inch socket extension, and torque wrench inch-pound to tighten the hold-down bolt.
  • Torque to 10 Nm (89 in-lbs)
  • Gently push the battery by hand to confirm it does not move.

Step 10: Connect the Positive Cable First

  • Install one battery terminal felt washer over the positive battery post if using felt washers.
  • Place the positive cable clamp fully down onto the positive battery post.
  • Use a 10mm socket and torque wrench inch-pound to tighten the positive terminal clamp nut.
  • Torque to 5 Nm (44 in-lbs)
  • Close the red protective cover by hand if equipped.

Step 11: Connect the Negative Cable Last

  • Install one battery terminal felt washer over the negative battery post if using felt washers.
  • Place the negative cable clamp fully down onto the negative battery post.
  • Use a 10mm socket and torque wrench inch-pound to tighten the negative terminal clamp nut.
  • Torque to 5 Nm (44 in-lbs)
  • A small spark may happen when connecting the negative cable; this can be normal.

Step 12: Protect the Terminals and Reinstall Covers

  • Use battery terminal corrosion protectant on both battery terminals.
  • Use your hands to reinstall the battery cover or access panel.
  • If fasteners were removed, use an 8mm socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to reinstall them snugly.

Step 13: Reset the Battery Monitoring System

  • Sit in the driver seat and close all doors.
  • Turn the ignition to ON without starting the engine.
  • Use the headlight switch to flash the high beams 5 times.
  • Use the brake pedal to press and release 3 times.
  • Watch the battery warning light on the instrument cluster; it should flash to confirm the reset.
  • If it does not flash, repeat the sequence once more.
  • The battery monitoring system tracks battery age and charge behavior, so resetting it helps the charging system treat the new battery correctly.

✅ After Repair

  • Start the engine and make sure it cranks strongly.
  • Check that the battery warning light turns off after the engine starts.
  • Reset the clock and radio presets if needed.
  • Drive normally for 10-15 minutes so the engine idle and charging system can relearn.
  • Recycle the old battery at a parts store or battery recycler. Do not throw it in household trash.
