• Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
• Turn the ignition fully off and remove the key (or keep the fob 10+ feet away).
• If equipped, pop off any battery cover using a plastic trim tool.
• BMS note: Your F-250 uses a Battery Monitoring System (BMS), a sensor on the negative cable that helps control charging; after replacement you should reset it.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Locate the battery (and confirm if you have one or two)

• Open the hood and find the battery tray in the engine bay.
• If you see a second battery on the other side, treat this as a dual-battery truck and repeat the disconnect/reconnect steps on the second battery too.

Step 2: Disconnect the negative (-) cable first

• Use an 8mm socket or 10mm socket with a 3/8" ratchet to loosen the negative terminal clamp.
• Lift the clamp off the negative post and move it aside so it cannot spring back onto the post.
• Negative first prevents accidental shorting.

Step 3: Disconnect the positive (+) cable

• Use an 8mm socket or 10mm socket with a 3/8" ratchet to loosen the positive terminal clamp.
• Lift it off the post and position it so it cannot touch metal.

Step 4: Remove the battery hold-down

• Use a 13mm socket with a 6" extension for 3/8" ratchet to remove the hold-down bolt(s).
• Lift off the hold-down bracket and set it aside.

Step 5: Remove the old battery

• Install a battery lifting strap and lift the battery straight up and out.
• Set it on the ground (upright) away from the truck.

Step 6: Clean and prep the terminals

• Use a battery terminal cleaning brush to clean the inside of both cable clamps until shiny.
• Install battery terminal anti-corrosion pads on the new battery posts.

Step 7: Install the new battery and secure it

• Lower the new battery into the tray in the same orientation as the old one.
• Reinstall the hold-down bracket using a 13mm socket and 3/8" ratchet.
• If using a torque wrench, tighten the hold-down bolt to 10 Nm (89 in-lb).

Step 8: Reconnect cables (positive first, negative last)

• Reconnect the positive clamp first using an 8mm socket or 10mm socket with a 3/8" ratchet.
• If using a torque wrench, tighten the terminal clamp to 6 Nm (53 in-lb).
• Reconnect the negative clamp last using an 8mm socket or 10mm socket with a 3/8" ratchet.
• Spray the terminals with battery terminal protectant spray.

Step 9: Reset the Battery Monitoring System (BMS)

• Turn ignition to ON (engine OFF).
• Within 10 seconds: flash the high beams 5 times, then press the brake pedal 3 times.
• Watch for the battery/charging indicator to flash (if equipped); that indicates a successful reset.

• Start your F-250 and confirm it cranks strongly.
• Check that the battery warning light is off.
• If you have a multimeter, charging voltage at the battery with engine running is typically around 13.5–14.8V.
