🔧 Wrangler - Battery Replacement
You’ll remove the old 12V battery, clean the cable ends, and install the new battery with the correct orientation. This restores reliable starting and prevents electrical glitches from low voltage.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- Always disconnect the negative (-) cable first and reconnect it last to reduce the chance of a short.
- Keep tools away from the positive (+) terminal and metal body parts at the same time.
- Wear gloves and safety glasses; batteries can leak acid and vent gas.
- Do not smoke or create sparks near the battery.
- Battery disconnect is not strictly required ahead of time (you’ll be disconnecting it during the job), but make sure the key is out and all accessories are OFF.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Access the battery
- Open the hood and remove any battery top cover (if equipped) by hand.
- Use a shop rag to wipe off loose dirt around the terminals.
Step 2: Disconnect the negative (-) cable first
- Use a 10mm socket (or 10mm wrench) to loosen the negative terminal clamp nut.
- Twist the clamp gently and lift it off the battery post.
- If it’s stuck, use a battery terminal puller (specialty) (a small tool that presses the clamp off without prying).
- Tuck the negative cable aside so it can’t spring back onto the terminal.
- Torque to 6 Nm (53 in-lbs) when reinstalling this clamp.
Step 3: Disconnect the positive (+) cable
- Use a 10mm socket (or 10mm wrench) to loosen the positive terminal clamp nut.
- Remove the clamp and move it aside so it cannot touch metal.
- Torque to 6 Nm (53 in-lbs) when reinstalling this clamp.
Step 4: Remove the battery hold-down
- Locate the hold-down at the base of the battery.
- Use a 13mm socket, 3/8" ratchet, and 6" extension to remove the hold-down fastener(s).
- Set the hold-down parts aside where you won’t lose them.
- Torque to 17 Nm (150 in-lbs) when reinstalling the hold-down.
Step 5: Remove the old battery
- Lift the battery straight up and out using the built-in handle (if present).
- Keep it upright to avoid any acid spill.
- Tip: Batteries are heavy; lift with legs.
Step 6: Clean and prep the terminals
- Use a battery terminal brush to clean the inside of both cable clamps until shiny.
- Wipe with a shop rag.
- Install battery terminal anti-corrosion pads onto the battery posts (one per post).
Step 7: Install the new battery
- Place the new battery into the tray in the same orientation as the old one.
- Reinstall the hold-down using the 13mm socket, 3/8" ratchet, and 6" extension.
- Tighten with a torque wrench: Torque to 17 Nm (150 in-lbs).
Step 8: Reconnect cables (positive first, negative last)
- Install the positive (+) clamp first and tighten with a 10mm socket.
- Use a torque wrench: Torque to 6 Nm (53 in-lbs).
- Install the negative (-) clamp last and tighten with a 10mm socket.
- Use a torque wrench: Torque to 6 Nm (53 in-lbs).
- Spray a light coat of battery terminal protectant spray on both terminals.
âś… After Repair
- Start your Wrangler and confirm it cranks strongly.
- Check that the battery is secure and cannot move.
